As a long term hiker and highpointer, I have experienced my share of failed attempts. I have lost ascents due to storms...wind...rain. I've had been turned back by injury, by lightning, locked gates, the police, and a bear. But today was a new one.

I was in NW Florida and thought I'd drive by the state hp. I have a laser surveying instrument for work, and I thought I would try to survey and locate the correct hp. So I drive up, and I find a path into the woods heading SW from the monument area. Figured I would scout it out before breaking out the laser level. So I walked a couple of hundred feet into the woods. Figured I was going too far south, so I turned around. And when I did, between me and the park was an old man, walking toward me.

He had something in his hand as I approached. And I realized...it was his Johnson. Yep. That's what I said. I said "oh I'm sorry!", and turned around. I figured he had walked into the woods to pee. Yet a couple a seconds later I looked back, and he was still coming my way. Still holding it.

And swinging it around.

I gave him a wide berth, and got the hell out of there. I failed the ascent...take Florida off my completed state hp list. And after today, they can have it. Gonna be a long time before I can try this one again!
