Subject: [cohp] I've had lots of failed ascents...but this one...

As a long term hiker and highpointer, I have experienced my share of failed attempts. I have lost ascents due to storms...wind...rain. I've had been turned back by injury, by lightning, locked gates, the police, and a bear. But today was a new one.

I was in NW Florida and thought I'd drive by the state hp. I have a laser surveying instrument for work, and I thought I would try to survey and locate the correct hp. So I drive up, and I find a path into the woods heading SW from the monument area. Figured I would scout it out before breaking out the laser level. So I walked a couple of hundred feet into the woods. Figured I was going too far south, so I turned around. And when I did, between me and the park was an old man, walking toward me.

He had something in his hand as I approached. And I realized...it was his Johnson. Yep. That's what I said. I said "oh I'm sorry!", and turned around. I figured he had walked into the woods to pee. Yet a couple a seconds later I looked back, and he was still coming my way. Still holding it.

And swinging it around.

I gave him a wide berth, and got the hell out of there. I failed the ascent...take Florida off my completed state hp list. And after today, they can have it. Gonna be a long time before I can try this one again!

So would you rate that climb a class 5 (x) because of the exposure?

I would suggest it was only a class 3 (x). Some exposure, with handholds required.

Well you know that a surveyor running an accurate level line always requires someone to rock the rod........

Not always that you go out in the field and find someone with the situation well in hand.

Back in 1997 we had a whole file devoted to failures (below)

I suppose many of us have experienced ordinary failures due to
injury, weather, access & wildlife that you mention. And
getting lost, poor planning, late start, poor conditioning,
sickness, chickening out, poor vehicle, mechanical failure, etc.

But you have raised the bar on this one, getting
sexually harassed right off a HP.

I recall a couple other extraordinary failures, one poor
soul accidentally burnt up their car, and an EQ challenged
individual got ejected from a group hike and ordered off the peak.

Any other out of the ordinary failures ??

(1997 file)
The following do not include minor or moderate errors in finding the
correct approach but reflect honest attempts (and honest rejections) of
reaching a peak. "Lame Successes" record minor goofs and not-so-stellar
performances. We'll assume that most hikes are completed with "One Try."
An asterisk indicates a change from previous version. Input donated by
Olson, Martin, and Mitchler.
