Mount Tamalpias - West Peak

The historic consensus seems to be the popular East Peak of Mount Tamalpias is the highest point in Marin County, CA at 2571'. The West Peak, the story goes, was higher, but was blasted/bulldozed down to make room for a military installation and is now 2563' (according to Wikipedia).

Andrew Kirmse and I have come across a number of sources that appear to indicate that the West Peak, despite the man-made modifications, is actually still a couple feet higher than the usually-climbed East Peak.

This link leads to a super-detailed map of Marin County with 2-foot contours, presumably from LIDAR:
http://www.marinmap.org/Html5Viewer/Index.html?viewer=mmdataviewer http://www.marinmap.org/Html5Viewer/Index.html?viewer=mmdataviewer
It shows the West Peak at 2576' and even shows a point elevation at the equivalent 785.3 meters, higher than the East Peak at 2572'/784m.

This site talks about a movie called "The Invisible Peak" about clean-up efforts on the West Peak:

It says that the West Peak is 2574 and still is what remains Marins highest spot.

Finally, Bob Burd posted a trip report where he used his GPS to get readings at both places and found the West Peak 2 feet higher: http://www.snwburd.com/bob/trip_reports/west_n2_1.html http://www.snwburd.com/bob/trip_reports/west_n2_1.html

If the West Peak is higher, that is a major bummer, since the top is a military/radar station and is fenced off and not easily accessed. The 2-foot contour map seems to show that the two 276' contours are entirely within the compound, but reports are that the area inside the fence is pretty flat and most people feel good calling it a successful climb if they walk the entire fenceline. I, like many others, have climbed only the East Peak (328 logged ascents on Peakbagger, vs. only 36 for the West Peak).

Does anyone else have any more authoritative information on this situation? Perhaps some intrepid Californians with precise sight levels or other equipment could do some on-the-ground research.

When I did the West Peak of Mt Tamalpais last year with Sam Grant, if I recollect correctly, it almost felt like the highest natural ground was to the east-northeast since everything inside the fence had been polished and paved. Hmmm. What do you remember Sam?

Campbell Hill (Ohio) access.

Does anyone know if access to Campbell Hill, OH, is dependable on a Saturday or Sunday?

A couple years back a few of us arrived on a weekend only to find the main car entrance gated/locked but off to the left of the gate was a lesser foot traffic gate that was unlocked providing access to stroll up Campbell Hill. It did appear lockable, though, so I was wondering if anyone knew if this foot traffic gate is only unlocked during certain hours on certain days?

Thanks,
Jobe Wymore

The main gate is generally closed on weekends but the walk through gate can be used. If you want to drive in during the weekend, contact Robert Walker at the school and he can arrange to have it open if you know about what time you will be there.

I found the same thing a few months ago on a weekend and got up with no problem through the small gate to the left of the main gate. Have fun!
