Hillsdale CoHP, Michigan.

Having recently discovered "cheap flights" I took advantage of a $68 roundtrip flight between Portland and Chicago. The weather looked iffy a few days prior to take off but as things got closer the weather took a turn for better. Two huge days had me clocking in 1100+ miles along with nabbing the following -

Fisk Benchmark, MI. (thanks Josh!)
Briar Hill, MI.
Grove Hill, MI.
Clinton County, MI.
Hillsdale County, MI.
Richland County, OH.
Morrow County, OH.
Huntington County, IN.
Benton County, IN.
Highest point in Chicago.

Prior research had me a little concerned when it came to Hillsdale County, though, since others had reported mixed findings on Peakbagger. Below is my report.

Hillsdale CoHP, Michigan.
April 16, 2016.

First off, besides being a CoHP, this one caught my eye being one of 39 peaks in the "Lower 48" (sorry, Gustav) with 100 miles of Isolation. From looking over Peakbagger.com it had seen several people logging in ascents but a couple trip reports caused me concern. My long day out CoHPing had me making good time so at the last minute I decided to do a quick recon to aid me in my hike I had planned for the following morning.

I pulled up finding the business gate locked that others mention in their write-ups but with nowhere to park I continued on a short ways to the intersection of Hudson and Steamburg Roads which has a business offering storage rental units on one of its corners. Across the street is a huge lawn that is part of the business with the before mentioned locked gate but it had no fence and thus wasn't posted. I decided that the Hillsdale CoHP needed a closer recon that I had initially set out to do.

After locking things up I crossed the road, hopped a grassy ditch and set out on foot across the lawn aiming for a huge storage building at the back of the property and base of the wooded hill. Once I reached the storage building I plodded to to my right (on grass) eventually finding a metal deer(?) stand and a good cut/path that provided access into the thick woods. This path eventually petered out but once it did the woods opened up and the southern most of the 3 bumps was easily obtained.

On top I found a vehicle width path that continued northward so I simply followed it as it joined up with a newer ATV track that showed recent use. The ATV track continued on but not before joining with another vehicle wide path that went to the top of the middle area. From there I continued on the wide path as it topped out on the third and final area. Easy.

My altitude readings I took definitely show the middle summit that is marked as the highest on Peakbagger, as being the HP.

Well, it was getting late so I retraced my route until it reached the ATV track, this time going left on it, which ended up taking me in the direction of where I initially entered into the woods. Easy.

After a few pics I simply walked across the lawn and to my parked rental. With this route I never saw not one No Trespassing sign nor any other individuals - all was quiet. Mind you, I was there Saturday, early evening (not turkey hunting season!), not working hours. All my before mentioned anxiety was for naught.

I had been avoiding Hillsdale for the same reasons you had apprehension. My kids actually pointed it out on the Delorme map on our way out to Ohio this weekend, and I told them why we weren't going that way this trip. I think I'm going to try your timing and track the next time I head out to Michigan.

Yes, I've seen the same thing when I try to read messages
the last couple days. Both in Firefox & Chrome.
Sometimes it finally loads, sometimes not.
We are certainly getting everything we have paid for
from Yahoo ... (and we pay $ 0.00)

In any case, just send your post to:

cohp@yahoogroups.com

and it should get there. If it bounces send me the bounce
and we will take it from there.

see ya - Andy

Thanks Andy. I only use Firefox. It seems like it has been a week or so in this condition. I have waited for three or four minutes the last time with no results.
