Coby,

I'm a bit confused based on the multiple accounts of the West Peak. Is it possible to reach highest natural ground without going inside the fence? If not, how much lower is it outside the fence?

Wish I'd heard this conversation two months ago, as I went back to Mt. Tam at the start of my month-long roadtrip to make sure I'd climbed the highest boulders on the east peak (I'd visited as a kid and couldn't remember for sure). It's an area I don't mind returning to, though.

When I visited on Friday, I simply walked the perimeter fence, which was very doable. (I get very wet, but that was because it was raining.)

Sam stated on a recent email on the subject:

When I did the West Peak of Mount Tam last year with Jobe I remember after walking the perimeter of the fence we both felt like at one point we were higher than anything inside the fence. I don't recall where exactly that was but there was a point where the ground seemed to undulate slightly higher. We didn't take any readings to measure the elevation but we both felt good with calling it the highpoint.

As Jobe mentioned, the north-northeast corner of the site seems highest.

Im fairly particular on these issues, but I was satisfied despite not getting inside the fence.

Coby
