John,

I would like to ascend this peak. I live in the greater Seattle area so I
would definitely like to do this.

Ken

I'm wondering if anyone out there wants to try Mount Stuart in late summer
using the usual Cascadian Couloir route. Send an e-mail to
<john.hamann@us.af.mil>

These telecommunication gates are often posted with no trespassing signs, but what I usually do when I approach gates like that is to call the phone number on the gate. It sometimes takes a long time of talking to a manager or what not, but I don't recall ever being told no when cohping in the midwest. Unless I can physically spot the owner ahead of time, it's always quicker to go this route if the phone number is on the gate. For telecommunications towers the people on the other end of the phone are managing numerous tower sites and deal with maintenance and access of those sites all day long as their job. Because we are such a rarity, I suspect I am the first person they've ever heard of doing cohp'ing but it's easy to quickly explain the process. The request always follows the same lines. "I will walk entirely on the access road, I will not touch or attempt to cross the main fence of whatever tower it is, all I am is a weirdo guy who's trying to get the highest point in every county in state X. I am NOT a hunter." Then I park off the road as far as I can not to block anything (this was a dead end and I remember it being a tricky park), put a note in my dash in case anyone comes along that I had secured permission with the company so I don't come back to see a tow truck.

I don't remember the particular conversation on this one, but I knew I had to get to four different tower areas, but I only requested access to one (always make it the easiest possible request). I figured I could take a round about stroll to the first one (and maybe cross back over the road on the way back for the last one). The key is, they know I am there, and they know what I am doing.

I usually take a photo of the signs for future reference if anyone needs the info but I can't find anything in my albums for that day (other than the crazy toy dealer collection I had to deal with later on that day). Did you happen to get a photo of it with the number? That would be the key for others to get legal access in the future. If I remember correctly it was a standard FAA sign with the required contact info.

Fellow high pointers! On my trip west I did three Ky. County
high points
the last two days (as well as a variety of other p300s):
Boyd ,
Franklin, and Shelby. I have nothing to add to existing
reportsfor the
first two, but a story of interest for the third.

Shelby County, Ky.Jeptha Knob, May 7, 2016

I found the only trip report listed confusing for this one;
the author
mentions an alternate road to the gated main road, but I
didnt
understand what he meant.

I turns out this one is problematic, perhaps that is why
only two people
list completions in Peakbagger. From US 60 there is a small
sign on the
left To Jeptha Knob Road. I tuned there and found
Jeptha Knob Road a
few yards up. It starts as a well-paved road heading for the
peak and
changes to well maintained gravel. About 0..3 mi. from the
hp
coordinates I ran into a locked double gate covered with
signage
threatening trespassers and neer-do-wells with all manner of
grievous
penalties including death of your first-born child. Better
not go that way!

I retreated to along steep driveway just down from the gate
on the left.
I parked at the house on the top and knocked. I was greeted
by a
friendly Mrs. Morehouse.I explained county high pointing and
asked if I
could park and walk up a forest track that starts in her
yard and heads
toward the high point. She had no problem with that.In a
couple of
hundred yards the track comes to a clearing with a rolling
meadow and a
larger array of equipment than the usual microwave
installation. I
wandered the area for a half an hour trying to cover the
various
candidates.

As I walked along a gravel road an older man approached with
a child on
an ATV. He is the owner of all the land on top of Jeptha
Knob including
the high point candidates which he knew about in detail,
claiming that
surveys identified four spots all exactly 1188 feet. I doubt
that, but
maybe he knows the facts. He allowed me to continue walking
but was
clearly irritated at my presence and wanted me to leave s
soon as
possible. I showed him my maps and GPS and where I had been
already and
hoped he could guide me so I was sure I hit the right spots.
He looked
quickly and asserted that I had already touched all four
spots, but I
think he just wanted to encourage me to leave as soon as
possible. I
explained that Mrs. Morehouse had given me permission to
cross her
property, but he stated quite clearly that she had no
authority to grant
access. I asked how I could have gotten permission from him,
and here is
where we hit Catch 22.His family owns all the land atop the
knob
including all the hp candidates that they apparently lease
to the cable
company. I had the impression when I encountered him that he
was
patrolling the property. His house is behind the massively
posted gate
so it is hard to see how anyone could approach him for
permission (which
I get the impression would be denied anyway). So even if
there is an
alternate road up to the vicinity, there appears to be no
legal way to
climb this CHP.
