Belmont-Paul Women's Equality National Monument (90+ ft.) (May 15, 2016)

On April 12 of this year, President Obama issued a proclamation creating the Belmont-Paul Women's Equality National Monument. The p redecessor to this NM was the Sewall-Belmont House and Museum, headquarters of the National Women's Party. The transition is not yet complete, although officially the NM came into existence as of the President's proclamation. According to two of the ladies in the house, the Park Service will take over the management around July. There is already a new sign in front of the house, but the ladies who have been maintaining the house and conducting the tours will continue to do so in the immediate future.

On Friday, after finding out what I could on the Internet, I called the NM and spoke with a lady who gave me more information. She said that visitors were admitted only for guided tours, and that I could sign up for one on-line. I turns out I had to Google Visit Sewall-Belmont in order to download the sign-up page for the tours. As I said above, the transition is not complete and information is to be found under both the old and the new names. Valuable parking information was also to be found on this Web site. Tours are given on Fridays and Saturdays at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. The NM is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on those two days. As I had signed up for the 1 p.m. tour, this gave me a free hour before the tour was scheduled to start. The NM is located on the northwest corner of Constitution A ve. and 2nd St. NE, so that was what I was aiming for.

I approached the city from the south, driving north on I-95. I could have taken I-395 directly into the city, but my plan was to take I-95 & I-495 across the Potomac into Maryland and then take MD exit 2, I-295, north into the east side of the city. That went well up to the point where I got off I-295 too soon. I exited at Capitol Ave. (or St.) South, which was not the same Capitol that runs east-west past many of the major Federal buildings and monuments. The street I was on went generally north, and somehow (I don't exactly recall at this point) I found myself goi ng north on 3rd St. SE. Figuring correctly that if I went far enough north on 3rd St. SE it would become 3rd St. NE, I drove to Capitol Ave. There I turned west one block and turned north on 2nd St. At the traffic light at Constitution Ave. I could see the Sewall-Belmont house diagonally across the street, and it matched the pictures I had seen on-line. Eureka! I continued north on 2nd St. one block to the intersection of 2nd St. NE and C St. There is a sizable parking lot on the northwest corner of this intersection. I had read on-line that this was a Senate parking lot during the week, but that the public could park there on weekends. So I did.

>From there I walked south a block to the NM and, where there was an Entrance sign and an arrow pointing to a long flight of stairs, climbed the stairs to a sort of patio. A lady came out and told me that, while the tour wouldn't start for the best part of an hour, I was welcome to walk around the garden, which was at that level. I was also welcome to use the bathroom, a more immediate need.

The garden is perhaps 15 feet or so above street level, and is certainly not a natural surface. In fact, I don't believe there is any natural surface anywhere on the NM grounds. The dirt around the house is perhaps 3 or 4 feet above street level and is planted with shrubbery. The garden is planted with various vegetation, and I thought the high ground was a low mound near the walkway into the entrance. I planted a foot on a couple of other high areas outside the walls, but again, I don't think any of that lies on a natural surface. This is one of those National Monuments (Castle Clinton is another, along with several other forts) where we will have to be satisfied with just doing the best we can.

I found all the ladies who were staffing the NM on this Saturday to be very pleasant and accommodating. They told me that since the proclamation they had received a considerable increase in the number of visitors who wanted to visit the newest NPS acquisition and who wanted their NP "passports" stamped. They were hoping that the increased publicity would result in continued increased visitation. As far as they knew, I was the first highpointer who had visited.
