I think this line of reasoning is held by many others in the community and
I look at peakbagger lists as a bit of evidence. National parks, which are
much more stable and easily definable have 17 people on peakbagger who have
it on their priority lists. In contrast, the national monuments list has
only Dave Covill showing it as a priority. Now, obviously peakbagger is not
the sum total of all list happy climbers, but it is a large sample size of
the community.

### Viewing the PeakBagger site, I see a nice up to date list of them,
current, performed by our amazing webmaster there Greg Slayden. Keeping up
with the Obamas ( isn't that a TV show ? ) is tough when Barack keeps
making NM's. John M & I theorized long ago that his goal was to be the
president who created the most NM's. Looks like he has won....

Score =
Obama 23+
Clinton 19
Teddy R 18
Jimmy C 15
Woody W 13
Cal C 13
Franklin R 10
Others less

Perusing the list of 121 NM HP's carefully, I see about 21 give our take 3
maybe, that represent true, defined, popular "summits" that a peakbagger
might visit if he/she wanted it for a different reason than just a Nat Mon
HP. That's being generous, this list might be closer to 15 actual
"peaks". I deduce that anyone who has visited the majority of these 15-21,
or ANY of the other 90-100, must be somewhat interested in Nat Mon HPs.

I understand that there is a feature on PB called "List Priority". I have
filled out mine, most do not employ this fascinating column on their List
of Lists. Currently, there appear to be a few dozen people who are actively
pursuing Nat Mon HPs.

Score =

John Mitchler = about 95?
Dave Covill = 81
John Vitz = 42
Fred Lobdell = 27
Dennis Poulin = 25
Bob Packard = 21
Andy Martin = 18
Richard Carey = 15
Jobe Wymore = 15
Eric Kassan = 15
Ken Jones = 14
Laura Newman = 14
Jerry Kohn = 13
Bob Sumner = 13
Gordon Macleaod = 11
Edward Earl = 11
James Barlow = 11
Terry Flood = 10
Mark Nichols = 10
Adam Helman = 10
Bob Schwab = 10
Many with 8 or 9....

I know that Bill S had visited a fair number of them prior to leaving this
group in 2012....

http://www.peakbagger.com/list.aspx?lid=1827&cid=2284

In summary, I would say that Monument Mounting is a real activity, although
pretty limited in popularity so far. If we were to exclude the popular
"peaks" from the list, and only count die-hard aficionados, there may be
only a couple dozen people with a passion for this.

I will say that visiting them has been an enriching pastime, and has taken
me to places I never even knew existed. I have seen geology, culture, and
history that most have not seen. Aniakchak Crater was so cool, flying into
it on a float plane to a lake within, and it sees only a handful of
visitors a year, almost none to the crater rim highpoint.

I plan to lead a day trip during the MT-16 HP Club Konvention to Custer
Battlefield / Little Bighorn NM, and Pompeys Pillar NM, on the Friday of
the convention. Please join me. Details in the next newsletter of course !

One thing to consider regarding Priority Lists on peakbagger is that the
National Monument list was published on the site fairly recently. I
haven't updated my priority lists in several years, so the NM list doesn't
show up. It would be there, as might be assumed by my totally crappy NM
"peak" ascents last year. :)

administrivia - Firefox workaround for yahoo egroup web site

Problem - in Firefox browser yahoo egroup web pages never load,
or load extremely slowly.

Fixes:
1) Use Internet Explorer
or 2) In Firefox right click link, then select
Open Link in New Tab
or 3) Avoid the Yahoo egroup web pages if at all possible.

Example:
Using Firefox go to:
https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/cohp/info

Note the spinning icon in the tab at top. It
spins for a loooong time.

Try to read a message by clicking on it.
Nothing happens, icon happily continues to spin.
User not so happy.

Workaround in Firefox:

Right click on message, open in new tab, bring tab
to front by selecting it. Icon still spinning,
but the message is now displayed.

Note: This worked on my Firefox browser in the scenario described.
Other factors: running Windoze, date 5/17/2016, Arizona
Time Zone, Zodiac sign Pices. Your mileage may vary.

Trip Report: Military Working Dog Teams Nat'l Monument - a virgin National Monument HP?? - May 16, 2016

By sheer coincidence, this national monument high point was mentioned in a post just the other day, but I had never heard of the peak until I was sitting in class in San Antonio, bored on a break, and happened to do a map view of National Monument High Points. I saw a red dot in San Antonio. What?! I didn't think that there was a National Monument here! Just the National Historic Park for the missions. I did some google research and determined that this would pair well with Atascosa County for my Monday afternoon. The daily digest hit my inbox later with a mention of this Nat'l Monument by sheer coincidence! No GPS tracks were made for these simple walks...
Military Working Dog Teams Nat'l Monument TR:

Well, the most important question of all: Am I the firstpeakbagger to go for the summit of Military Working Dog Teams NationalMonument? If so, cool. If not, oh well

You can waze or google map your way there

Exit US-90 at Military Drive and head south to LukeBlvd. Turn left here. There is a visitors center where non-DoDpeople can be granted access to the base to visit the monument. The law that created this monument guaranteesaccess to the public to visit the monument, so dont let some rent-a-cop at thegate turn you away. The supervisorsshould know the rules about this. Onceyou are in the gate at Luke Blvd, go just over 0.25 miles to Kenly Ave and turnright. Pass a new-looking building withbig windows and park in the lot on the south side of it. The monument is just south of this parkinglot. There are also some interesting AirForce aircraft lining the parade field that are worth checking out if you wantto walk around it.

Dogs very welcome at this National Monument!!
I made a beeline for the monument and quickly went to all ofthe high ground contenders, mostly little bumps around the recently-plantedtrees. The monument is pretty cool. Who doesnt like dogs after all? There is a fountain with a soldier pouringwater into his helmet for his dog to drink. It is designed so that people can bring their dogs there and drink outof it. Sadly, it was dry on thisvisit. I walked to the southwest andnorthwest corners of the parade field just in case the whole field is part ofthe monument, though I do not believe that it is. It was cool to see the aircraft I guess.

An interesting note about my experience with militaryworking dogs: the dogs that our Marine Expeditionary Unit brings out on theships cannot remain aboard the ships for more than 14 days or they becomemission-incapable or some other term that a staff Major invented for apowerpoint. I wonder how long we humanscan remain on a ship before we become mission-incapable? My co-workers found this as amusing as Idid. I am pretty bummed that we wonthave the dogs on the ship very often though they would be the ultimate moralebooster! I wont complain as my shiptime was all above the waterline unlike my brothers in the silent service belowthe waves Jogging in the sun and breezeon the flight deck of a CVN or LHD is not the worst the Navy has to offer!

Trip Report: Atascosa County, TX - May 16, 2016
Following my successful ascent of Military Working Dog TeamsNational Monument High Point, I made my way to Atascosa County in pursuit ofanother peakbagging gem of the Lone Star state. As I arrived at the corner of Benton City Rd and McConnel Rd, the homeowner from the property directly adjacent to the south of the high point washeaded down his driveway. I made sure toput my cell phone up to my face to make it look like I was pulled over tosafely text, not stealth a high point. He gave me the Whatchyou doin here boy? look. Ahhh, Texas As soon as he was out of sight, I made a rapid approach to the dirtdriveway heading due east from McConnel Rd towards the high point. The land is now some ranch, though thestandard 4 favorite words of any Texas county high point land owner aremissing: Private Property No Trespassing. Due to the lack of signage, I headed east (not that a sign would stopme). Naturally, the owner of theproperty that you walk right past just to the south of the high point owns twopuntable yapper dogs. Hooray! I was of course wearing my red shirt as mygreen shirt smelled worse from the weekend in Big Bend and I have not yet donelaundry I got away from the dogs andmade my way into the woods. The highground is pretty obvious, which is nice. The flowers were in bloom, so the ground was covered in mostly yellowwith some red mixed in very beautiful! The pictures dont do it justice. As I retreated to McConnel Rd, a different truck had arrived at thehouse to the south. The driver wasrummaging around in a shed 15 feet from me as I walked past, but he did notcome out to see what the dogs were fussing at whew! I did not look back as I hauled ass towardsthe road without looking too guilty. Iducked under the gate again and made my way to the car. The guy in the shed never came out or noticedme at all. Close call I could have BSd my way out of it I amsure. I wasnt on his land, just theadjacent land Good luck with this one you walk right past an inhabited house that is set well back from the mainroad! Onward to Texas BBQ dinner.

If anybody else has done the National Monument High Point ahead of me, please come forth and claim your glory!

Two from last week on the drive from San Antonio to Big Bend and one from today near San Antonio. All Texas gems of highpointing...
TR: Frio County - May 13, 2016
I parked along the side of Highway 57 just east of the unused road that leads due south to the summit. The fences in this part of Texas are all 10 feet tall. I guess they really don't like county highpointers here. I waited for a lull in traffic and then climbed over the fence and moved as quickly away from the road as I could. There is a fence that splits one unused Road on the west side and a firebreak cow path on the left side. I stuck to the east side until I was right near the High Point. There is a good section that you can climb over right here. As I climbed over I could see the house. I made a beeline to the High Point, took my pictures, and went back over to the east side of the fence as quickly as I could. I then made my way back down to the highway and hid in the bushes until I didn't hear anything so that I could climb back over the fence and walk back along the road the short distance to my car.

TR: Maverick County - May 13, 2016
As I approached the parking spot for this one, border patrol was driving the parallel dirt road at 5 mph - ugh.... I pulled over short of the desired parking area and took a leak to avoid looking suspicious until they crested the hill and dropped out of view on the other side. This road doesn't see much traffic so it was much nicer to park here and cross to the gate out of view. I hopped the chest-high gate and proceeded west towards the highest ground. I explored the area thoroughly, feeling that the highest natural ground is just west of the point on peakbagger. After the obligatory summit shots, I wandered back to the car. No issues whatsoever! Onward to BBQ in Del Rio and real peaks in Big Bend!

TR: Wilson County - My 17, 2016
**Access Update**

If you want to claim this high point, do it ASAP!! There is new construction on the property and it looks like it is nearly complete. The high point is definitely on their property and based on every CoHP trip report I have read for Texas, access is not readily granted. I parked right in front of the gate along Wood Valley Dr. I checked for neighbors and residents, and hopped over the gate. I walked up the driveway, past the new house and into the backyard. The high ground is where other reports have described it, just east of the fence separating it from the next lot over which has no construction going on. I set my tripod on the fence for a picture and took a few other pictures of the area, as well as the new house.
