On vacation in the northeast for a week, Monday (May 30) Annette, Braxton, and I visited the two areas for
Grand Isle county, VT.
First the northern area, where the old gate at a dead end drive now leads to a house and barn. A 'Keep Out, Private Property' sign is along the driveway, but we were there to ask permission. Turns out the southern area of the contour is near the barn and house. Two vehicles were parked by the barn, but nobody answered knocks at the door of the house or barn, so we quickly checked for highest ground here and left. We next drove north to the next driveway, #36, and drove to the house and gained permission to park in their driveway and hike back into the woods. We checked the center and northern areas of the contour, hitting several high bumps.
We drove over to Jay Peak ski area, but the trams aren't running until mid-June, so I was looking at a good hike for Big Jay, Franklin county, VT. We spent the night at the Jay Peak resort.

Tuesday, May 31
Franklin county, VT Big Jay.
I started hiking at 6am, and followed the ski trails, which double as hiking trails in summer, around the side of the main tram lines, and was below Jay Peak at 7:30. I easily found the gap in the fence, found the manway just into the woods off the Long Trail, and summited at 8:04. I signed a jar register hanging on a tree, walked over to the high bumps nearby, and refueled. I hiked down the same way, birdwatching both ways, and was back at the lodge at 9:40. I was then able to shower in time for us to hit the indoor water park at 10:30, which we enjoyed for a couple of hours.

Essex county, VT East Mountain
We were able to drive 6.5 miles up Radar Road, just past the buildings on the right, and parked at in intersection with a road on the left. Just past this the road is blocked by 2 loads of rocks, a huge metal pipe/cylinder blocking the entire road, and three large rocks buried in the ground. We hiked the paved road to the summit, me feeling the elevation at the steep part about 1.5 miles up. We explored the summit area, hitting a few possible highpoint candidates.

York county, Maine question:
Have people lately been using the southern, Quarry Road route, or the northern blocked road route just past a house?

Thanks!
Ken Oeser

If you're talking about Hosac Mountain, don't use the southern approach just past a house that dead ends at a gate. I chatted with the owner of the quarry the day before to gain access and she said no problem. Well, due to the proximity convenience of having done Clark Mountain just before we decided to use the area by the northern gate to park. Once we returned we had a note on our windshield saying we were trespassing and they had taken our license plate number down and if we were to return they would call the cops. I'm thinking the other route is your best bet but the number that Spooky Mike has listed on CoHP.org is your best bet for info.

Today I received a call from Dave Covill from the windswept plains of Nebraska. He had just completed his 599th county highpoint. This means that next Tuesday (June 7th) after some Highpointers Foundation business on Mount Frissell, we will celebrate his 600th highpoint on the slope of Alander Mountain, the highpoint of Columbia County NY.

Anyone who cares to join us on this auspicious occasion can meet us at the ranger station for Mt. Washington State Forest in the southwest corner of Berkshire County MA. We plan to head out about 1pm for the easy walk up Alander and down the southwest ridge to the NY-MA state line and the highpoint of Columbia NY. Supplemental oxygen is optional. Please let me know if you plan to attend and I can provide details and make sure we meet before leaving the trailhead.
