Yesterday, June 4, I had a long day county highpointing in the northeast:

Stratton Mountain, Windom County, Vermont
At 2:45 am, the alarm went off in our (Annette and Braxton stayed behind) room at the Black Bear Lodge at the base of Mount Stratton, and 10 minutes later I was headed up the mountain, following the trail under the main gondola run halfway up, then along a gravel road to the right and all the way to the top of the gondola as the sky started to brighten up. I backtracked about 200 feet to the trail over the firetower. The start of this trail has a cable across an opening in the trees. I made it to the firetower at 4:15am, found the benchmark, then wandered some short trails in the woods just behind the firetower to what seemed to be the highest point. I was back down at 5:15am

Copple Crown, Strafford county liner, New Hampshire
We drove over to Alton, NH, met Melissa Lardiere and her dog Delilah at 8:08, then drove over toward Copple Crown. We took a wrong turn up Copple Crown Road to the golf course first, went to the end of the road to a split, right to a private drive, straight a little bit to some rough spots going downhill. Turning on the GPS, I found we should have been on Mountain Road, so we backtracked and made it to the end of the road by the old ski lift. We first hiked to the summit of Copple Crown, then down to the liner at 10am, searching up and down the ridge to make sure of hitting the liner, and found a register placed on July 4, 2015. This was in a jar hanging on a tree with a red cord. We hiked back by contouring around the mountain to the trail, which is much shorter and easier.

York county, Maine
We had obtained permission to park at the quarry gate, and did so and began hikng up to Mt. Hosac. The road here is very steep all the way up. Near the junction with the road to Hosac summit, we decided I should head on over to Clark Mountain. I went to the yellow gate marking the property boundary, and followed the ridge up to the summit with a large boulder at 1pm. I hiked down the same way and over to the summit of Hosac Mountain to meet Annette and Braxton. I scraped up my toes hiking back down to the car, thanks to gravity constantly shoving my feet to the front of my shoes on the very steep gradient.

Essex county, Massachusetts
We drove down to a parking lot just before Holt Hill and hiked up to the summit along the paved road, reaching the top at 3:45pm. Bobolinks were singing in the unmowed field just below the summit.

Bristol county, Rhode Island Mount Hope
Dave and Becky Covill met us at the corner parking area to hike up Mount Hope. Dave had arrived early and scouted a couple of routes to the summit, so he led our small group around the right of the old road and up through the shrubs and trees to the summit, reaching the top at 5:40pm. Thanks to Dave for saving us a few minutes here!

Middlesex county, Connecticut
We drove over and parked on the road by the radio tower around 8:15pm, and were able to hike the trail and the short bushwhack up to the old firetower foundation at 8:40pm. Back at the car at 9pm.

This made me the second person to finish six states in a day, joining Becky Covill in a small club. I asked Dave on Mount Hope if he was going to get me lost or bash my liegs with his thrashing stick to keep me at 5 completions so that Becky could keep her solo status.

Somerset County, NJ

We met Mike Schwartz at 11:28pm in Morristown, then drove to a shopping center and jumped into Mike's van. He drove us up to the parking area for Somerset county, and we crossed the rock wall over the highpoint area. MIke and I looked around with lights through some stumps and a couple of downed trees, finding the high area quickly, but not the rock with a cairn on top. We spread out and Mike found it at 11:52 pm, where I joined him, Annette, and Braxton at 11:53 pm.

This finished NJ for me, my seventh completion for the day.

Congrats, Ken!

Hearty congratulations to Ken Oeser on his feat of completing the county HPs of seven (7!) states in one day. In my judgment, this sets a record that will be difficult to break. He did this yesterday, June 4, 2016. Below I list his completions in the order he did them. Times are in some cases approximate.

Vermont: Ken finished the Green Mountain State on Stratton Mtn. in Windham County at about 4:15 a.m. He is the 39th completer of VT.

New Hampshire: He completed the Granite State on the Strafford County liner on Copple Crown Mtn. around 10 a.m. He is the 41st finisher of NH.

Maine: Ken completed the Pine Tree State in York County on Hosac Mtn. around 1:15 p.m. He is Maine's 21st completer.

Massachusetts: Ken finished the Bay State on Holt Hill in Essex County around 3:45 p.m. He is the 37th person to complete Massachusetts.

Rhode Island: Ken became the 83rd person to complete the Ocean State around 5:40 p.m. He finished on Mt. Hope in Bristol County.

Connecticut: Ken finished in Middlesex County around 8:40 p.m. He is the 63rd person to complete the Nutmeg State.

New Jersey: Finally, Ken ended his long day in Somerset County, New Jersey, around 11:55 p.m., when he became the Garden State's 20th completer. This is the first NJ completion in Somerset County. New Jersey has now been completed in 11 of its 21 counties.

Just climbed Mt Hayden on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon last week. The register from 1994 contained the names of Bob Packard and Bob Martin. Always nice to find those names on peaks.
