'New Jersey: Finally, Ken ended his long day in Somerset County, New Jersey, around 11:55 p.m., when he became the Garden State's 20th completer. This is the first NJ completion in Somerset County. New Jersey has now been completed in 11 of its 21 counties. '

Fred Lobdell ############################################################################I thought Windham County, VT was going to be a first completion county; did someone beat me to it?Ken Oeser

I know it's a long haul, anyone interested in next weekend? I have a window, might as well do something with it...
If time/energy permit, there are some SPS peaks along the way...
Thanks, JG

So Sweet to See Sovereign Ken Oeser, Summiter of Seven States Saturday. He
is beyond the King, he is the Greatest !!! ( OK, enough Muhammed Ali... )

I hope that Andy or Greg can figure out how to re-do the banner atop the
cohp.org page and allow Ken to assume his rightful position there for a
good long time. Beckie is getting tired of the Queen of New England
stuff...

*****************

We arrived about 20 minutes before the Oesers at Mt Hope. I ran up,
encountered some brush near the top, but it wasn't nearly as bad as the
TR's led me to believe. I found a clear path around to the right,
following the old road up. There was frequently asphalt junks a few inches
down under the pine needle duff. I saw 4 male tom turkeys right on top.

On the group's way down, a guy in a Haffenreffer museum truck stopped by
while we were exiting the woods. He mentioned it was private property, I
said we were in the vicinity for the Haffenreffer Museum. He said it
belonged to Brown U. I replied I was an alumnus, he seemed satisfied. He
actually worked for some Farm nearby that was part of the museum complex.
All the signs we saw made me think that the museum was indeed still
functional; they looked somewhat new. We got lucky; he could have made it
unpleasant for the Oesers to continue on with their trek. We should have
parked further back from the corner.

****************

I am off tomorrow to the vicinity of Mt Frissell w Roy Wallen. We plan to
meet the head ranger of the Mt Washington St Forest on the MA side of the
line, and discuss ways for the HP Foundation to help out there. After we
plan to hike to Alander Mtn for my 600th cohp. I was able to bag Sioux NE
last week to move to 599. TR is at PB.com, will re-post to this forum.

Dave ( more about the number 600 next week... ) Covill

A few things have changed since the Mitchler-01 and Surgent-04 Trip Reports.

I drove to the house purported to be occupied by Jim Koch, west of the road
and slightly south of the access lane at MM 8.9. Turns out he never lived
there. It is occupied, for two decades plus, by Terry and Phyllis Gillett (
no "e", pronounced like the razor ).

They were super, called up Jim Dunn on Jim's cell. Jim said I could go on
up anywhere I wished. Terry ( age 77 ) drove me in his 4WD, and we went up
and over most of the candidates east of the main one with the two
buildings. I agree with all findings; this main area is highest. I used my
trusty 5X level, and the ones to the S and SW were noticeably lower. The
ones back to the E were close. We drove back over them again on the way
out, even the larger one with the small cairn. Andy would be proud, old
Terry did a perfect Martinization of the main contour.

Jim Dunn bought the land that contains the highpoints frr Georginne
LaBarr. In 2004 or so, her husband had passed away, and Jim Koch was the
"caretaker" of it for her. She put it all up for sale, and Jim Dunn outbid
Terry and took it all over, to extend his pastures westward. He now owns
all 27 candidates. You can drive in to the Dunn or Gillett ranches, or call
ahead.

I would not have driven my Suzuki SX4 into there. It turned to just grass
immediately. Terry had a large 4WD truck, and he motored slowly over the
grass. Ditches were tiny for it, but still 6"+ deep for a car. I think I
could have walked out to the main point, and across the ones E of it, and
back in about 45 minutes. I would encourage walking and not driving on the
pastures.
Call Jim Dunn at 308-665-5707-cell

This was my 599th cohp. I had just left Panorama Point NE, and was headed
to Harney Peak, for HP Foundation work.

Congrats to winger on Mt Hayden. I think it's rated 5.7 or 5.8 and I count it among my hardest climbs. Jody Ross led Bob Martin and I up there.

Mt Hayden is one of 160 interior GC buttes I've climbed. This goes along with 6000 miles hiked in the GC. I'm one of only 3 (2 still alive) to have

hiked the full length of the GC below the rim from Lees Ferry to Pearce Ferry on BOTH sides of the Colorado River.

The most PROMINENT interior GC butte is Vishnu Temple, but Mt Hayden is higher I believe.
