Hearty congratulations to Dick Ellsworth on his completion of the county HPs of Kansas. Dick finished the Sunflower State on June 27, 2016, in Chautauqua County. He is the 5th person to complete Kansas.

I've been in Montana for a few days now plucking CoHPs here and there. I'm not sure why more people don't venture up here? It's great. With only 2 completions noted in Peakbagger (Packard and Helman) this state is still raw and not overrun with 50+ completions. Now for a recent trip report...

Wheatland County, Montana
Cinnamon Peak South, 8772'

I had to do a little leg work on this one since ascents are rare. Gustav Sexauer was extremely helpful in pointing me in the right direction and now I'm doing the same for you.

First off, as many of you migrate towards prominence this peak will continue to slide since "Cinnamon Peak South" only clicks in with 292' feet of "clean prominence" but all the better. It leaves a clean seldom climbed peak just to the north of Crazy Peak for those of us who still pursue CoHPs for what they are, the highest point in a county, period.

But back to Gustav... With the research he'd done on Wheatland County, he pointed me towards the McFarland-White Ranch that lies somewhat to the east of the peak. After a few calls I got redirected to Melody, who co-owns the operation. She was very nice as was her daughter, Rachel. I was told to show us at 7:30AM to "sign in" and also to get directions for the climb so off I went arriving a tad early. Now their ranch has more than cattle - dogs, cats etc, a very comfortable place. It also acts as a hunter retreat in the fall with the ranch setting up clients for the night with full accommodations. With that in mind, this county is a no-go in the fall as hikers aren't allowed up there during hunting season.

As I sat down in their home to "sign in" with my personal info and Montana ALS# they mentioned "a old guy" came here years back and another followed a couple years later, other than that no requests. After chatting about things it turns out the 2 they mentioned were Bob Packard and Tim Worth. It has been a loooong dry spell since the last request. They made certain that I knew on more than one occasion that the "old guy" was "fast".

Like others they had me park next to Elk Creek, and commence my hike walking over a bridge that spans it. From there it was a pleasant, yet long, hike across the expanse of their ranch till I got to Forest Service land. En route I hiked through 4 gates with the 4th being the one entering public land just prior to Bear Springs. At Bear Springs I was treated to a Zika Virus orgy with the mosquitoes out in force. It was quick, though, since soon thereafter I entered into a spiderweb thick forest on a solid Trail 634 which I took to a saddle that lies around Section 7/8. I guess the mosquitos were scared of getting entangled in webs?

Now be sure you take this trail all the way to the saddle since the woods are beyond thick once things start to steepen off to your left. I once tried to head upslope early only to be forced back downslope and start all over. I can compare the thickness of these woods as to the ones you encounter up high in the Northeastern USA if not a bit more robust. The woods just beyond the saddle moderate a tad and enable you to break out easily as you gain altitude. Once you head upwards the woods give away to loose yet easy steep plodding till there's nothing but open views.

After 1000+ vertical I found myself high up on Cinnamon Peak with the South Summit, well, to the South. It's open ridge walking up high with the customary up and downs till the summit is eventually reached. I startled 2 huge bull elks along the way but eventually with the summit cairn reached and opened up, it still had Packard's glass jar register from many moons ago. Upon inspection since 2001 only 5 people had signed in - Packard, Worth, Jim Perkins(?) and a couple of ranch hands. I guess Adam Helman was going through one of his no, I'm not signing into summit register phases since his name wasn't in there? Also quite possibly one of his no, I'm not asking for permission phases since Melody had no recollection of him.

The decent was uneventful and as thunderclouds blossomed in the sky I felt privileged to have this one behind me. Onward I go. This was my 362nd Contiguous Western USA CoHP.
