Dave & Beckie Covill accomplished 2 cohps together on the 4th of July
weekend.

Sierra Blanca Peak

No decent TRs for a very long time.

Used a little assistance.....

We had a choice of an $18 gondola ticket, or a $80 zip line ticket for the
Wind Rider. This is America's highest and longest zip ride. Its a doozy !

We rode the gondola up with our zip ticket, hiked the peak, rode the
gondola down, got all lined out for the zip ride, rode the gondola up
again, then the zip line down. You get going about 65mph on it. Yep....

For Sierra Blanca, as always no negative signage, tons of signatures on the
log books in the mailbox. Others on the peak that day. We spoke with
Native and non-Native people at Ski Apache. Most just said " be
respectful" or "ask permission if you can" etc.....

Took us about 1:40 up and 1:10 down gondola to SB to gondola. Clouds and
fog and wind, but mild, about 48-55 on the mtn. Yes, score a burger at the
yurt by the gondola top.

We were here and failed last October due to an early snow, with Ken & Karen
Jones. We hiked all the way up, but conditions were icy near the top. Looking
at it on Saturday, turns out we were within 150' of the summit.

Cookes Peak

No decent TRs for a very long time.

Charlie Wingers is still OK, although mileages are off a bit. From NM 26
at the water tank, go N on the good gravel Cookes Peak road 10.4 miles. At
about mile 8 it turns to dirt. Still totally fine for Hilary's Mini Cooper
all the way to 10.4.

At this point, abandon any low clearance vehicle. High clearance is a
MUST, and not a Subaru. I had the Rodeo in 4WD, although that may have been
overkill. Drive a little over 2 miles, I think 2.3. Get to the point
where there is a flat parking spot right at the junction with the terrible
bladed "trace" heading west. Not possible to drive up it more than 100'.

We hiked from here up the old road, up the faint trails which are
well-cairned, to the flat ridge top. Follow cairns from here to high
saddle, and then to summit. Other TRs describe it fine. I would call this
Class 2+, for sure not 3. We made it up in 2:50. Nice on top, tons of
lady bugs, many aphids as well.

Got onto a wrong set of cairns on the way down at the upper saddle, lost a
little time, got back on track and made it down in about 2:30. Could have
been closer to 2:00.

Nice dry day, tons of visibility. Really a pleasant hike. About 20 entries
in register since late 2014, only one I recognized was James Barlow.

Beckie now has 5 to go for NM COHPs.

Dave (have repeated 2/3 of NM now) Covill
