I did a few of those in June. Adams is about as normal as they come for a midwest county. It even has the added benefit of not having a house in sight on the approach. Badger looked like a haven for redneck mischief. Franklin's land owners were a bit scary (New owners since old trip reports, but the guy seemed to have no problem with me going up there with permission, despite signs stating the exact opposite spray painted into cars on the road behind his house).

I just finished 12 of Maine's county highpoints. I am so sick of bushwhacking in Maine's forests. However I would any one of them again, except East Turner Peak...what a POS.

Subject: [cohp] Never Go Back CoHPs.

Where this thread is going isn't where I'd intended but I'm jumping on the bandwagon and adding an additional twist to the equation in helping it evolve into Never Go Back CoHPs. I'm sure it'll have the chance to morph into something further if given the chance. In this form, though, I think it has the opportunity to provide the well traveled CoHP addict a heads up that there's potential things could get hairy and to prepare fully.

Obviously when someone has summited Rainier 600+ times it doesn't deserve to be on a list like this but out there in the USA there has to be 20 solid consensus CoHPs that most individuals who have trod their flanks, or wandered their fields, could somewhat agree there's no way they'd ever go back. Now there's always exceptions to the rule like Greg Slayden's two ascents of Big Horn under his belt.

The three off the top of my head that I'll toss into the ring that I'd "Never Go Back" are =

1) Laveaga Peak.

2) Animas Peak.

3) Grays Harbor CoHP.

In the past access conditions may have been more appropriate on Laveaga and Animas but not anymore. And Grays Harbor, well, having it still fresh on my mind I'm certain nobody could talk me into a repeat climb of a near vertical (at times) climb up a thick salad bar. I enjoy eating salad but not that much. The "peak" is relatively safe but has potential for extreme consequence for those in a rush.

Is there any of you out there ready to add any others or vouch for the three I've proposed?

Jobe Wymore

My Buffalo (Jefferson CO) recommendation is fall when the brush has died
back, it was fairly pleasant when I was there.

Many wonderful peaks for me are "never go back to" peaks not because of
some negative aspect to them, but because for me, once was enough. I still
fondly remember my climb of Rainier in 1997, but I never ever want to do it
again. Same for probably 50 other ones too.

However, some of the "easier" cohps have been very unpleasant:

Hardin County TX: we did this in heavy rain. The area is within a bladed
"community" in the piney woods of Southeast Texas. The whole place looked
rundown and scary. The heavy rain and mud didn't help, but fortunately the
visit was very short. Unless I am missing something here, I maintain that
the piney woods of that part of the country are really ugly and dreary. The
trees all grow in close to one another, all the same size and shape. Is
there something attractive to this that I haven't been told about?

Harmon County OK: I was here late in the day being chased by a big
thunderstorm from Texas. The area looked abandoned. After a point, the
roads look unmaintained, the brush grows over the shoulder and onto the
pavement. The HP is (was) in the front yard of a home. When I got there, I
didn't see anyone, but that added to the creepy aspect. The actual HP visit
took just a few moments.

If I had to choose one in the west that I have done, I wouldn't redo Black
Mesa (Navajo AZ) a 3rd time. I did it once, didn't care for it, but did it
again so my wife could claim it. It was a little more fun, but it's still a
long hike across a mesa, into and out of a couple canyons, aiming for a
rockpile in the trees. You do get nice views of Monument Valley, but from a
long ways away. All the while you hope your cars are still there when you
get back.

Verizon buys Yahoo

Mike Schwartz notified me that Verizon purchased Yahoo:

http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/wireStory/verizon-buys-yahoo-483b-marking-end-era-40847798

Verizon will combine former Yahoo and former AOL together -
hopefully the blender is set to stir, not frappe :)

(Mike)
>>Do we have an alternative if Verizon discontinues or ruins the groups?

Have not looked into this. Those with recommendations can send
them to Mike, Scott and myself offline.
Hopefully nothing changes for the worse ...

For what it is worth I have text copies of all digests back to
day one (1997). Porting these to a new group email
server would be non trivial :(

I've also taken some of my content (area counts and old FRL
spreadsheet) in the yahoo egroup files section and
copied it to cohp.org file system. You can see this by browsing

http://www.cohp.org/Writers/AndyMartin/

Those wishing to do something similar can contact me to get
the directory
http://www.cohp.org/Writers/[YourName]
set up. You will still have to copy your files.

Finally, at one time Adam wanted to host the egroup on cohp.org.
(I have no idea if this is practical at the present time)
Adam would have been tickled to see Cohp.org possibly
outlast Yahoo.com ...
