As mentioned before, those "never go back" counties in the east will probably be chosen based on access issues or bushwhacking hell and not technical difficulty.

The two hands-down counties for me are Brunswick, NC and Tyrrell, NC. Tyrrell was really only doable because of a recent forest fire, and that was still a lot of miserable bushwhacking. Peter, Brian and I all walked away with charcoal-colored clothing and I almost drove my Camry into a ditch because of the muddy roads in the wildlife refuge.

I left a lot of flesh in Brunswick. A thorny, briar-filled bushwhack with plenty of devil's walking stick to throw into the mix. It took a long time for my dog to forgive me after that one.

As for mountainous peaks in the East, I nominate Mt. Porte Crayon (Pendleton, WV highpoint). Unless an easier route has been found, this was a long, annoying bushwhack through thick spruce and rhododendron. I also did this one before I had a GPS, so that added to the difficulty.

There is a much easier route up Porte Crayon, but it has access issues. My trip report was removed from cohp dot org at landowner request, but I can provide details privately.

My two never-go-back contributions:

1. Kenosha WI: Had already summited and was relieving myself in the orchard on the way out when I was accosted by the very angry, shotgun-toting landowner with whom several of us have had unhappy meetings. I assured him I would never return, and some fifteen years later have never considered doing so.

2. Lorain OH: Thankless bushwhacking through thorns and muddy fields on a very rainy day to do multiple, indistinct, liner highpoints.

Mike S.

My hat is off to those plucky northeast hikers who thrive
on this stuff.

There are several things hikers _never_ do in Arizona:

1. Start a hike uphill in the rain.
2. Go slip slidin' away on rocks and mud.
3. Enjoy summit views of fir trees one foot away in every direction.
4. Skip a sit down snack on the top - nowhere to sit, and the
bugs would have the best meal.

You might say we are spoiled rotten ...

The cohp are not even particularly bad among ME peaks:

I remember walking an hour after dark without lights coming down Barren Mtn as the fir was so thick you couldn't see your feet, not that you needed to as if you tripped on something you couldn't fall over. It was like swimming in oatmeal working your way through.

I once arrived near the summit of S Abraham to find my companion crawling around looking for the highest point as it was too thick to traverse standing up.

But unlike AZ, no poisonous snakes and no need for home air conditioner.

I just finished 12 of Maine's county highpoints. I am so sick of
bushwhacking in Maine's forests. However I would any one of them again,
except East Turner Peak...what a POS.

### Yikes, how could I forget about that ! P.O.S. is a fine term for
East Turner. We did it as a big gang at the ME-13 Konvention. Not very
far, but took the whole day, 90d and 95% humidity, bugs of all flavors, and
I had to hose out my daypack when I got back home to get the crap out of
it. I felt we were rock climbing, with small fir trees as the hand holds.

Some have likened it to the bushwhacking in the South. Feel free to slap
me silly next time I mention I might do a Deep South Bushwhack....

While I'm on it, last one I wouldn't care to return to: Strafford NH -
Copple Crown liner. Ugghhhh..... I have now done it twice. Roy Wallen
and Beckie & I were there a year ago. Ugly, Buggy, Dense Trees, No View,
Uncertain Location...... I could go on. Just a place to visit and run
away from.

The exact opposite of Sheridan WY Split-Rock; I would run up there again if
I had a day and was going by there more or less.

Actually East Turner is easier this year. The State of Maine has a piece of Public Reserve Land on the north side of the peak and is presently doing logging in there. They have placed a temp bridge over Katahdin Brook and using the old roads to the north. I haven't been up in the area this year so I don't know if it's gated - likely not. I expect the bridge to be removed after completion of the logging.
Then again, by that time it may (or may not) be surrounded by a national monument.

Friends -

I spoke not long ago with Mark Hall, head of the SC Dept Nat Res who is in
charge of the improvements atop Sassafras.

He notes that progress is slow, but steady, and that they are on track to
have a summit "structure" built by late Fall 2016. This observation
platform should contain an area, perhaps within it or around it, that
incorporates a large number of paver stones (bricks). I believe there
will be roughly 25 Large, 25 Medium, and 100 Small bricks. I think the
sale of these to the public garnered them perhaps $50K.

Many of you helped to fund the acquisition of 2 of these, and the HP
Foundation placed a 3rd brick that notes Highpointers Club and promotes the
Club and hobby of Highpointing.

I will report back when I know more, for now; let's just hope that they
continue to make progress. If there is one thing I have learned in working
with the HP Foudnation for a decade now, its that nothing happens
overnight, nor even within the supposed time frame. Everything takes
months or years to happen. Permission, Funding, Action...

Dave (miss you EE) Covill
