>>Someone else mentioned pocket earth recently. What mapping does it
use? Openstreetmap?

I believe so.
Screen shot comparison with OsmAnd is at:

cohp.org/writers/andymartin/Apps/OsmAnd%20App.PNG
cohp.org/writers/andymartin/Apps/Pocket%20Earth%20App.PNG

Information is very similar, presentation is different.

Note that the Openstreetmap website contours don't match
the apps (The apps seem to be better). I'm not sure why.

cohp.org/writers/andymartin/Apps/OpenStreetMap%20Website.jpg

>>I was using OsmAnd+ (there's doubtless an IOS version) over the
weekend in Slovakia and found it impressively detailed, down to
individual house level! I can only assume the national mapping agency
make their mapping available (which the IK sadly does not). It does
voice guided navigation offline although I've not used it for that, just
for hiking.

I've downloaded it and will take a look. The contours for one
area are free, unlike Pocket Earth.

Note that screen shots of most of the apps described below
can be found by browsing:

(Andy's review of IOS apps for peakbagging)
For IOS I like the following mapping and GPS apps.
Some of these are also found on Android.

Benchmark Atlas Apps $5
https://www.benchmarkmaps.com/digital-maps
The app is $ 5 per state. I got NM. Then you can download
the parts of the Atlas you want, plus USGS quad coverage for
anywhere in the USA. This is my "Go To" app for getting
USGS maps on my device, and real time display of my
location on the map. Handy for night time driving to trail
heads.

Peakbagger APP for IOS & Android - Free
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/peakbagger/id1040718067?mt=8
Shows nearby peaks in the peakbagger database even when
you are offline.

Pocket Earth - Free
https://pocketearth.com
Nice maps and points of interest, but
you need to be online to get a driving route computed,
so I use Navmii for driving routes.
Easy to add points of interest offline. Good database
of points of interest. Some travel guides.

Pocket Earth Pro - $5

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pocket-earth-pro-offline-maps/id481679745?mt=8
You can download topo coverage for anywhere in the
world. Very handy when outside the USA.
Have used iPad on some hikes
to navigate with these maps.

Navmii - Free
Voice navigation for driving, USA & Europe & ...
Will compute driving route offline.
Maps not as nice as Pocket Earth.
http://navmii.com/

Have not tried paid versions of voice navigation.
Navmii is free and works adequately, but does have some bugs.
Best when passenger is "supervising" to detect bogus
directions.

Google Maps app - Free
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Maps_(mobile_application)
This was my "Go To" navigation app on 2014 Greek trip.
However I now prefer Pocket Earth Pro and Navmii.
It is a pain to have to download Google maps in advance, and
you need to be online to get a driving route computed.

GPS receiver HD - Free
https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/gps-receiver-hd/id397928381?mt=8
Simple display of GPS location.

Sol: Sun Clock - sunrise, sunset, and golden hours - Free

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/sol-sun-clock-sunrise-sunset/id491537291?mt=8
Handy if you want to start hiking at first light - or before.

Current Radar weather in USA and Europe is provided by
My Radar (only when online). For long term forecasts no
app is needed, just https://www.wunderground.com/us/az/tucson
and take a screen shot of the chart.

regarding google maps offline: in the past few months, at least on
android, gmaps gained the ability to do offline route calculation. you
still need to have preloaded the map... but, for example, i have pretty
much the whole of the nevada sierra range pre-loaded. not sure if this is
just the android version or not though.

the trio of apps i use on android are:

- peakbagger (zeroing in on peaks, USGS maps and caching trip
reports/summitpost offline)
- gmaps (offline directions)
- locus maps (tracking, pre-loaded tracks, OSM offline maps, small fee
per state in the US, country in the EU)

County HPs during Montana Highpointers Konvention

I am planning a dayhike to Castle Mountain, the Carbon County, MT high point, on Friday August 12th. It will be a very long day - 20 miles, 4800 feet of gain, and possible snowfields that may require ice axe and crampons. Reply to me personally if you have any interest at: greg (at) peakbagger.com.

On Saturday, August 13th I was thinking about a mellower trip, before the banquet, to the Yellowstone County HP, or perhaps some other objective near Red Lodge, maybe Big Pryor (prominence peak). Again, let me know if you have any interest. Thanks!
