Recent Trip

I returned home on Aug. 17 from a lengthy trip in conjunction with the HP convention that was held in Red Lodge, MT Aug. 12-13. I left home on Thursday, July 21 in order to attend the Extra Milers meeting in Fort Wayne on the 23rd. On this trip I got to the highest point in 8 counties, 3 National Parks, and 2 National Monuments. Unfortunately, my hiking had to be severely restricted because of two injured toes on my left foot.

Cohps: Rockcastle, KY; Paulding & Putnam, OH; Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Clinton & Dickinson, MI; and Harney, OR.
Parks: Badlands, Crater Lake & Voyageurs.
Monuments: Fossil Butte & Newberry Volcanic.

Trip reports for all of these except Mt. Scott (Crater Lake) are posted on Peakbagger.

In addition, I also visited the highest point on the Minnesota border. This point is only a couple of hundred feet west of the westernmost HP area in Lincoln County, MN, which we visited at the time of last year's convention. However, my navigator, who shall remain spookily anonymous, failed to notice the proximity of the border HP. (He claims the miss was because a rank amateur did the trip planning.)

I also got two new "lifer" bird species. The first was a Sage Thrasher, seen in northwestern Colorado while waiting out a construction delay. The second was several Western Grebes, seen at a city park on a lake at the south end of Klamath Falls, OR.

I also got one new mammal: a Columbian Ground Squirrel, seen while eating lunch (me, not the ground squirrel) at the first rest area on I-90 east of the ID/MT state line.

On to the convention. County activities were sparse, but Jerry Brekhus led an assault on the HP of Big Horn County, MT. This was not a strenuous hike, but it required a long drive on not-so-good dirt roads. The possible trip to two National Monuments was cancelled owing to a lack of cooperation on the part of park authorities at Little Bighorn Battlefield.

Convention activities went on pretty much as scheduled, except that the Club powers-that-be demonstrated once again their complete inability to handle a banquet. They brought some older guy up to the front to lead the 280+ people in the Pledge of Allegiance and the invocation. He took almost a half hour to do that, rambling on with political and religious lectures and inaccurate history while people were getting hungrier. There may be one or two people besides me who like to eat dinner before 8 p.m., but club leaders don't seem to realize that. In addition, the unfortunate people from the caterer who were waiting to do the serving had to stand around for a long time. For me, this was the last straw, and it will be my last convention. I may show up at the convention site to participate in non-convention activities, but I'm done with HP Club conventions. I am currently undecided about letting my Club membership lapse, but I may be done with the Club also.

A lot of locals will be incensed

Deasey is a fine peak, long drive and modest hike. A couple I know were fire lookouts there for 2 weeks, in and out by helicopter and no visitors during that time.
