Mrs. Quimby wanted her gift property to become a National Park but this was blocked by Maine's Congressional delegation. Like Sieur de Monts National Monument, it may become a National Park eventually.

Mrs. Quimby recognized that attempting to add Baxter Park would kill the whole thing for sure. That's not to say that other supporters of the Maine Woods National Park don't feel differently. I wonder if the AMC will get tired of land management and toss in their multitudinous acres.

Reminds me of how the Adirondack story could have made Marcy an NP HP. In the early 1970s the late Laurance Rockefeller, then head of New York's state parks (or just formerly in that position, I can't remember) proposed an amendment to the state constitution that would turn pretty much all of what is today the High Peaks Wilderness Complex (and maybe the Dixes, Giant Mountain and Seward Range, which would have brought the Franklin County HP into it as well) to the federal government to create an Adirondack National Park. His reasoning at the time was that the state wouldn't be able to manage increasing impact.
The idea was pretty quickly shot down by both locals and conservationists for a variety of reasons, the real one being that it is much easier to lobby Albany on this than Washington. And as far as I know no one has seriously considered reviving it (although it did take the state practically the rest of the century to come up with a final management plan for the High Peaks).
