Hello,

This Labor Day I went up The Pinnacle, Great North Mountain, the Frederick VA coHP.
I was deficient in two regards.
1. I had GPS coordinates for the BM Capon, but batteries of my GPS were dead and I didn't have spares along.
2. I hadn't looked at the satellite map beforehand.

What I want to know is the experience of those who have been up there.
Did you find the BM Capon?
What did the ground at BM Capon look like, compared to the rest of the ground above the radio station tower?

Regards,
David Olson

Wayne Snyder, whose 2015 report is posted on PB, found a reference mark but could not find BM Capon.

According to the current USGS data sheet, the BM was recovered by geocachers in 2007, but there are zero details of the recovery on the geocaching website. Considering the dubious skill level of many geocachers (with apologies to group members who are geocachers), it wouldn't surprise me if what they found was the same reference mark located by Wayne Snyder.

The last documented recovery was in 1952. US Power Squadron failed to find the marker in 1998. I failed to find it in 2001 as have several others since. If anyone has found the marker, he/she has not published a report.

I agree that geocachers can be wrong in logging benchmarks, but so can the USPSQD. I found one in clear view on a bridge abutment that they didn't.

I can usually find a BM if I find the RM which are often more obvious. Using a tape helps too.

What do you mean by the "

dubious skill level of many geocachers?"

There is only one log entry for this log entry on the geocaching.com
website for this benchmark, by someone who is apparently not a regular
geocacher (only six geocaching and two benchmark finds):
