Everyone,

Unless severe weather rolls in I plan on being in Mississippi, January 8th, for a first light start at the following =

McCool Lookout
Choctaw County High Point
Winston County High Point

If you're interested in meeting up for what should be a quick 3 CoHP stint let me know. Drop me a line directly at thehasbeen at yahoo dot com.

Hearty congratulations to Steve Johnson on his completion of the county HPs of California. Steve finished the Golden State yesterday (Hallowe'en!) on San Jacinto Peak in Riverside County. He is the 33rd person to complete California and the first to do so in Riverside County. California has now been completed in 22 of its 58 counties. It should also be noted that San Jacinto Peak is the HP of the newly created Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument.

Thanks to Dave Covill for discovering this completion.

Fred Lobdell

Riverside Co, CA - Cactus To Clouds

First, thanks to Fred Lobdell and Dave Covill for recognizing my completion of the California County High Points. It is much appreciated!

I had planned to climb Mt San Jacinto in July 2013 while on a Southern California swing with highpointing buddies Mike McCormack and John Nicol, but the Mountain Fire in Riverside County shut us off of Riverside Countys high point, a loss only for me as Mike and John had already bagged it. That was a good trip, though, as I got Pinos, Sawmill, Baldy and San Gorgonio. San Jacinto would have to wait until sometime in the future.

Fast forward to the spring of 2015 when I knocked off the Merced County high point, Laveaga Peak with John. About the same time, Coby King put out to the COHP group that he had successfully negotiated access to the San Mateo County High Point. So I had (I thought) 2 Counties left to complete CaliforniaRiverside, for which I had considered the Cactus to Clouds route with almost 11,000 feet of elevation gain, and San Mateoan approximately 14 foot elevation gain from the owners driveway over the course of about 100 feet, having to negotiate several sets of wooden steps along the way. It was obvious to me that I had to finish with a bangSan Jacinto would be my grand finale and would have to wait until Coby got me to San Mateo first.

In addition, last spring, about the time that I successfully free climbed the San Mateo County high point with Coby King, Laura Newman, Mihai Giurgiuilescu, David Sanger, and Andrew Kirmse (who did I forget?) the Marin County question came upMt Tam East Peak vs West Peak. I had done the East Peak in the past with the family, and so to put that question to bed I did the West Peak with my wife and daughter this past Fathers Day. Only San Jacinto was left.

I drove down with my wife Kathy and son Nick on Sunday, checking into a hotel a couple of blocks from the Palm Springs Art Museum. The drive down was rainy the whole way, and I was checking the weather at the summit the whole timebut only a trace of rain had fallen in the area and temps at the top of the tram were at about 45 degrees, so snow at the summit was of no real concern. Mike met us at the hotel, we had a nice dinner nearby, and got to bed by about 10.

Mike and I were up at 5:15 and walked out of the hotel about 20 minutes laterfirst stop Starbucks, with backpacks on and hiking poles in hand. Coffeed up, we then walked the couple of blocks to the Cactus to Clouds trailhead and were off by about 6. We made steady progress with minimal breaks to the top of the tram, being passed only by a guy named Eric, an incredibly strong solo hiker from Colorado. We were up to the Ranger Station above the tram just after noon, where Kathy and Nick (who had come up via the tram) met us for lunch and resupply. After about a 45 minute lunch/rest, we all continued up the trail, Kathy and Nick breaking off for the Round Valley Loop and Mike and I heading up to the summit, where we topped out at about 3:30. We were the last ones up there that day as far as we could tell. Temps were probably down to close to freezing, but there was ample sun and little wind so it was a delightful summit experience. We were back down to the top of the tram at dusk, back to the hotel about 7 and celebrating at a nice restaurant at 8, surrounding by Halloween revelers. Certainly an unusual (in my experience) way to end a big hiking/summit day!

We were incredibly fortunate with the weatherthe storm that had brushed by the previous day had left a nice high cloud cover, and the temperatures were generally pleasant the whole way up. We carried too much water and food as it turned outbut I wouldnt have done that route with anything less. Final stats per my GPS track.10,712 feet of elevation gain, 16.1 miles to the top, plus another 5.3 back down to the top of the tram. What a way to finish the Golden State!

I am indebted to, and could never adequately repay, the many folks whose trip reports I have used to help me, John Nicol, and Mike McCormack get to many of the California High Points over the years. While I dont know you, I appreciate the breadcrumbs, virtual and otherwise, that you have left for us. Thank you!
