Dear Fellow County Highpointers:
Politics is a controversial topic. The intent of this posting is not to advocate for a particular political party but to objectively report the results of the past election. Please do not take offense. The purpose of this post is to be both informative and entertaining. Again, it is not to advocate for a particular candidate or party.
The second objection that might be brought up is what is the relevancy of the post to County Highpointing? The posting is actually highly relevant. The very name of this group "(COUNTY) HIGHPOINTING") is the embodiment of a political manmade distinction. If we were to climb highpoints based on geography say continents, mountain ranges etc that would be geographically based but this group's very essence is based on political boundaries, hence our name County Highpointers!
Thirdly, its relevant to a County Highpointer as we as a group enjoy travel. On our adventures we travel into many far reaches of the United States. We travel in red states and blue states, red counties and blue counties. We experience a fascinating array and diversity of cultures in our travels. Think how different the Kings County, NY highpoint (Greenwood Cemetery) a Democratic stronghold culturally is from Tishomingo County, MS which is solid Trump country.
Also, since many of us have to negotiate with County landowners, our demeanor, the way we talk, the license plate on our car may be a determining factor whether we "fare able to it in" and gain access. As a New Yorker driving with a New York plate in rural Mississippi I might be subject to extra scrutiny than if I were driving a rental car with Tennessee plates.
The convergence of geography with politics is a fascinating topic. Geography often is a determinant where people of a particular persuasion live. Its no accident that blue states tend to be in the Northeast and in the Far West and red states in the interior with battleground states now shifting to the upper Midwest. The mountainous coal country of the Appalachians, the automotive manufacturing and farmlands of the interior and the urban centers and outdoor recreational opportunities of New England, Colorado, California, and the Pacific Northwest attract very different types of people.
I'd welcome any constructive analysis on any points I may have missed.
I hope you will enjoy this very unique posting to this forum.

The following is a posting of the 2016 Presidential Election Results. I have compiled three lists.
The data was compiled from the Wall Street Journal Election Map 2016 Election Live: Full Results and Maps http://graphics.wsj.com/elections/2016/results/

Click on a State and all the individual counties will be revealed and how they voted. Its really fascinating to see!
So, the first list is a ranking of States by elevation. The first percentage figure is for the State and the second percentage figure is for the County where the State highpoint is located. The percentages reported are only the one's for the winning candidate in the State or County . In some cases both the State and County voted in the majority for Clinton or Trump and in some cases the vote was split meaning the State voted one way. So for instance in my home state of New York 58.8% of the popular vote went to Hillary Clinton. In Essex County, NY where Mt Marcy is located 48.2% of the vote went to Donald Trump. Donald Trump received more votes than any other candidate but since their were four candidates running he did not go over 50% in Essex County.

When you look at States by Elevation and how they voted here is the breakdown:
Hillary Clinton won 20 states
Donald Trump won 30 states

When you look at the County where the State Highpoint is located:
Hillary Clinton won 12 states
Donald Trump won 38 states
This is not surprising since the State highpoints are located in rural parts of the state which tend to vote Republican

Bluest State with highest percentage votes for Hillary Clinton Hawaii 62.2%
Reddest State with highest percentage votes for Donald Trump Wyoming 70.1%

Bluest County (State Highpoint) with highest percentage votes for Hillary Clinton Chittenden County, VT (Mount Mansfield 4,393 ft) Clinton 70.5%
Reddest County (State Highpoint) with highest percentage votes for Donald Trump Wallace County, KS (Mount Sunflower 4,039 ft) Trump 91.3%
Surprises:
Coconino County, AZ (Humphreys Peak) voted for Clinton
Culberson County, TX (Guadelupe Peak) voted for Clinton.
Litchfield County, CT (Mt Frissell) voted for Trump
Inyo/Tulare, CA (Mt Whitney) voted for Trump

Maricopa County, AZ TR
Mon Nov 14, 2016 1:31 pm (PST) . Posted by:
"Ben Knorr" nebbbben
I visited the highpoint of Maricopa county, Browns Peak, on November 4th,
2016. Bear with me as I'm filling in details from memory!

I approached from northern Phoenix off the 101 at Shea boulevard. I
followed Shea east through Fountain Hills, and turned left at the end of
the road where it intersects with AZ 87. I followed AZ 87 for about 15.5
miles, turning right on Cline Cabin road. The road is currently washboard
for the first mile or two, and turns into alternating smooth bladed granite
sand to rock strewn bumpy sections with ruts. I switched to 4wd a couple
times on some steeper inclines where my rear wheels were spinning a little,
but I think the road to the trailhead could be done most of the time with
high clearance 2wd if it were dry. The path was easy to follow, just
staying on the main road and not meandering until the road reaches the
turnoff to Pigeon Springs (

Follow the road to Pigeon Springs until it ends.

The evening before my hike consisted of thunderstorms and a fair amount of
rain in the Four Peaks area. During the drive in, there was light rain
falling consistently until I stopped. It took me almost an hour from
pavement to trailhead.

The hike is straightforward, climbing gradually as it heads south towards
Browns Peak. The views were vast and the overgrowth that I heard rumors
about was not bad. There were a few junctions on the trail- just stay on
the well trodden path. As the trail emerges on a saddle between Browns Peak
and 6988, take a path that leads roughly south towards Browns. I found no
cairns, but stayed on a good use trail as it climbed to an obvious chute
that faces north. The trail dips down to the west slightly until it gets
into the chute proper. I stayed in this chute for a while, but had to climb
some ledges to the east sides of the chute in several places because
slippery rock due to the recent rain. There are good holds throughout but
it was interesting to climb with my old trail running shoes.
