On a related to cohping note, Obama now has two months left to create more
National Monuments. The past few outgoing presidents have done several in
their final months. No reason to think he won't either. My numero uno
favorite for him to promote is San Rafael Swell in UT. Magical place."

Worth a pause to think about why some places are designated National Monuments, and what or why we should designate some spot as a National Monument? After all, there are only a finite number of square feet in the nation, and you can't keep designating new National Monuments forever. It is an admittedly a large number of square feet, but still finite.

And as a trivia question, has Dave Covill been to all the National Monuments (and Parks) in Colorado, and their high points, and how many years does he expect before someone creates another one, and where might that be?

Separately, has he been to all the Colorado State Parks, and their high points?

Congratulations to Jay Dolan and Matthias Stender on their joint completion of the county HPs of Arizona. Jay and Matt finished the Grand Canyon State this past Saturday, Nov. 12, on Black Mesa in Navajo County. They are the 58th and 59th completers of Arizona.

Thanks to Andy Martin for this information.

Thanks to Matthias Stender for information on
his recent ascent of Black Mesa.

(Andy to Matthias)

(Matthias Stender)
At the main intersection in Kayenta (the 160/163 intersection)
we turned right (south) onto a good dirt road which we followed
for 0.2 miles. We then turned right onto a good but a little
bit washboared dirt road which any vehicle can drive on. After
1.9 miles we turned right again where the initial road was bending
south following the power lines. This road now was a little bit
rougher and washed out in spots requiring a little bit more careful
driving but should still be doable by any vehicle in normal conditions.
This road goes to the 2 large, green water tanks which you can now
clearly see. After about 0.5 miles we came to an unlocked gate and
debated our options. Since we were not sure if we might find the gate
locked upon our return we decided to park at the gate and I pulled
my car behind a couple of juniper trees with the permit on the dashboard.

We started hiking up the road towards the water tanks as a truck came
by and stopped. A younger Native American who belonged to the ranch
complex near the tanks asked us what we were doing and we explained
to him that we wanted to hike to the top of Black Mesa. He seemed
to be okay with it and drove off without even asking for our permits.
We walked past the water tanks and through the ranch complex where we
saw the truck parked. We continued on past the ranch on the trail
without seeing anybody outside on the ranch except for a dog that
was friendly and didnt even bark. On our return we didnt see anybody
on the ranch either and found my car the way we had left it.
We didnt make any special arrangements or asked anybody if it was okay
to park there.

Please let me know if you are interested in further information
on the route but the Yazzi trail is fairly easy to follow except
for a few side trails further down where on has to pay some attention
and generally stay left as you go up.
