With respect to Greenland and Iceland, the former lies on the North American tectonic plate, and is therefore, geologically at least, a part of North America. The fact that it is a dependency of Denmark has no bearing on where it is located. French Guiana, on the northeast coast of South America, is part of metropolitan France, and sends delegates to the French Parliament. It is also part of the Eurozone and uses the euro as it currency. But it's still part of South America.

Iceland is one of those parts of the mid-Atlantic ridge that rises above sea level. The rift at the crest of the ridge runs right through Iceland, and can be seen at various points on that island. Areas west and northwest of the ridge lie on the North American plate, and areas east and southeast of the rift are on the Eurasian plate. Thus, geologically speaking, Iceland is ambivalent. But as it is historically and culturally part of Europe, it is usually considered to be part of that continent, and I have no problem with that.

And while I'm on the topic, let me mention that Hawaii is neither geographically nor geologically part of North America. It lies on the Pacific plate and is correctly considered part of that collection of Pacific islands plus Australia that is called Oceania by geographers.

Greenland is often not considered part of North America since it is a dependency of Denmark. If one does consider Greenland part of North America, Iceland is closer to Greenland than to Norway so one could argue for its inclusion, too.

A fact the Greenlanders themselves underscored in 1985 when they voted themselves out of what was then the European Economic Community, although for different reasons than just wanting to be geologically correct.

When Is a State Highpoint Not a State Highpoint?

Got to thinking about summits with the exact same name as state highpoints, and it turns out there are about 470 such summits, matching 25 of the state highpoints. There are also four Mt. McKinleys (CA, MT, OK, SD), and the one in OK is less than five miles from Mount Marcy.

The highest "state highpoint" is 13490' Mount Marcy in Colorado Sangre de Christos, which both Bob Packard and Andy Martin have climbed. The lowest is 132' Black Mountain in Massachusetts.

The one thing I forgot to check is if any of these "state highpoints" are actual county highpoints. That is left as an exercise for the reader.

Mike Schwartz

The list, ordered alphabetically by states:

CA--Mount Whitney: CA (San Diego County), NY

FL--Britton Hill: AR, IN, TN

KY--Black Mountain: At least 270 in the U.S., in 28 states. 50 in CA alone. An additional one in KY besides the actual state highpoint.

MD--Backbone Mountain: 3 in AL, AK, AR, CA, 2 in TX, WV(continuation of the ridge from MD that is the MD state highpoint, but extends several miles into WV to a higher summit).

MA--Mount Greylock: ID

MN--Eagle Mountain: 43 peaks in 22 states. Two additional peaks in MN, one of which is in the same county as the state highpoint.

MS--Woodall Mountain: ID, SC

MT--Granite Peak: 44 peaks in 13 states. Two additional peaks in MT, one of which is in the same county as the state highpoint.

NE--Panorama Point: 7 peaks in 6 states. Plus four capes, all in CA.

NV-Boundary Peak: CA, 2 in ID, NM. NY, WA

NH--Mount Washington: 14 peaks in 12 states, plus one in the Virgin Islands.

NJ--High Point: 55 peaks in 16 states.

NM--Wheeler Peak: AK, 3 in CA, NV.

NY--Mount Marcy: CO, MA, OK.

NC--Mount Mitchell: OR, WA

ND--White Butte: 13 peaks in 6 states; 3 additional in ND and 3 in SD.

OH--Campbell HIll: 21 peaks in 15 states. 2 additional in OH. 3 in ME.

OK--Black Mesa: 40 peaks. 21 in AZ, 3 in CO, ID, 12 in NM, NV, 2 in TX, 2 in UT.

OR--Mount Hood: CA, MA.

PA--Mount Davis: 2 in AZ, 2 in CA, NH, TN.

SC--Sassafras Mountain: 2 in GA, 2 in NC, TN.

TX--Guadalupe Peak: NM

UT--Kings Peak: CA. ID

VA--Mount Rogers: WA

WV--Spruce Knob: AK, PA, VT, 1 additional in WV.
