LiDAR and Trip Report -- Dare County, NC

Another long-overdue report from my backlog -- a look at the highest points on the Outer Banks.

First, a LiDAR analysis of the high point candidates:
http://www.thegreatzo.com/cohp/lidar/counties/nc/dare/

One good thing about the ever-shifting Outer Banks is that LiDAR data is flown frequently. I looked at five different data sets (dating from 2009-2014), which increased my confidence in the analysis.

Kill Devil Hill (the Wright Brothers monument) looks like the winner in the county. However, I also analyzed a point in the Nags Head Woods Ecological Preserve, which is very close in elevation. If I had only one data source to look at, I might have declared them too close to call. With five data sources, it looks like Kill Devil Hill wins out, even if only by 1-2 feet.

To no big surprise, Jockey's Ridge is not as tall as advertised -- in fact, it's down below 70 feet now, and not even in the top five highest points in Dare County. I'm not an expert on dune morphology, but I would be surprised if it's able to regain the 20+ feet it would need to overtake the other candidates.

Here's my trip report, with ascents of the three hills -- Nags Head Woods, Jockey's Ridge, Kill Devil Hill -- from June 20, 2012. GPS tracks and a whole bunch of pictures are included. I have to say that I enjoyed all three points, regardless of high point status, because the environments they're in are so different. One is in the forest, one is a wide-open dune, and one is a significant national monument. It made for a good day of exploring.
