Peak Baggers..............

According to a message I received from Garry Harrington:
"Larry Davis just topped 7,000 on Monadnock, I believe. I only have about
1,100."

Garry (a former sports editor like myself) has written a peakbagging book
called Chasing Summits.

************************************

### Fascinating. I would like to see that book some day. Several things of
note. He is very well documented on PB, and is not on LOJ. He, like
many, had to go back to Rainier to tag Liberty Cap. He took almost all of
2015 off from climbing; I wonder if he was injured? He says he basically
lives out of a van. I believe it, some of his strings of consecutive days
out climbing are very impressive, like a month or more. He claims to be
the 3rd person to bag the Lower 48 ranked 14ers. I think he is further down
that list than he realizes, but still a very impressive accomplishment.
btw - my friend here in CO Rich McAdams is possibly the first to do that,
in the 1980's. Some famous climbers from many decades ago set about to do
that, like Carl Blaurock even, but of course the lists in those days were
inexact. Gotta give them credit for chasing such a dream 60,70,80 years
ago.....

Gary Harrington's List of Ascents is reasonably similar to mine. I know
it would take a lot of programming effort, but wouldn't it be cool to
mathematically massage the PB database (or LOJ) and analyze what other
climber (or 2 or 3) was most similar to each and every person? For
instance, Gary Harrington and I have climbed hard on the lists of US state
highpoints, and US highest 100 and/or 14ers. We each have climbed some
internationally, especially in Mexico. He of course has many more NH and
New England peaks, I of course have chased NPs, climbed a lot in AK, etc....

I have to believe that if such a concept became a reality (where are you,
Edward and Adam? Your minds are needed...) that my wife Beckie would rank
high on my Most Similar List, along with John Mitchler, then followed by
Charlie Winger, Jobe Wymore, Greg Slayden, James Graham, Edward Earl, etc.

I'm not a mathematician at all, but it's some sort of a Regression
Analysis, right?

Maybe if we all send Greg Slayden some $$$, he can retire from Microsoft
sooner and get after this? Hah! Sorry Greg, we love you!

D ( patiently counting the days til 2016 is over and we get a fresh start
in 2017 ) C

The local bookstore advertised the book, should be little trouble to buy or request on interlibrary loan.

The programming is simple, just do a multi-regression against other members. What might choke is the CPU time as I don't know what type of system the databases are hosted on. For an even easier version, two members could be compared with a 2-part result, same peaks and different peaks. Are 2 members more similar if they have a higher same-peak score, or higher same-less-different score?

Here's an added touch of whimsy. Do we have any sets of identical twins in the peakbagging community? And if so, how do their stats compare? The Whittakers come to mind.

Crestone Peak

Dave Covill asked if anybody needed Crestone Peak. I'm sending this to the group in case the e mail address I have for Dave is defunct.

I would like to summit Crestone and its Custer CoHP neighbor, and would be interested in joining a group. I would be interested in doing this either as a day hike, or as a multi-day backpack-style trip.

My email address is fine; DaveCovill@Gmail.com

Same since 2013.

*************

Dayhiking the Crestones would be difficult. I would backpack in and enjoy
it. I have come from all sides; E from Colony Lakes Road, SW from
Cottonwood Lake up from near town of Crestone, and NW from Bears Playground
via Upper Colony Lake, and also from BP via Kit Carson and Willow Lake TH.
I would be inclined to go back to Cottonwood Lake, a tougher approach but a
minimal summit day.

I don't care how many come, as long as they are competent and experienced
with 3rd Class scrambling and can prove that via resume, and agree to wear
a helmet.

If its a dry Spring, we could go in July, but likely to be best after Aug
1. I am tied up with MA-17 HP Club Konvention in mid-late July.

NC, SC border shifting

Here is something that could affect state and county highpoints. It appears
that North and South Carolina have settled a border dispute, and as a
result, some homes and businesses in North Carolina will move their
addresses to South Carolina on Jan. 1, and vice versa:
