I would probably use an ordination technique, multidimensional scaling, that would create a similarity matrix of each climber with every other climber based on their climbing history. The results are often presented graphically as a point map. For this, each point would represent a climber and closer points would be climbers that have a more similar climbing history than any other climber.

With a table of climbers as rows, peaks in the database as columns, and the number of times each climber has climbed each peak as the data in the cells, the outputs could be generated pretty easily.

Cheers,
John Wiley

Here's an added touch of whimsy. Do we have any sets of identical twins in the peakbagging community? And if so, how do their stats compare? The Whittakers come to mind.

The local bookstore advertised the book, should be little trouble to buy or request on interlibrary loan.

The programming is simple, just do a multi-regression against other members. What might choke is the CPU time as I don't know what type of system the databases are hosted on. For an even easier version, two members could be compared with a 2-part result, same peaks and different peaks. Are 2 members more similar if they have a higher same-peak score, or higher same-less-different score?

NC-SC Borders Shifting

Here is something that could affect state and county highpoints. It appears
that North and South Carolina have settled a border dispute, and as a
result, some homes and businesses in North Carolina will move their
addresses to South Carolina on Jan. 1, and vice versa:

http://www.wtol.com/clip/12994080/nc-sc-state-lines-shifting
http://www.charlotteobserver.com/news/politics-government/
article79676647.html

*************************************

### I took a quick look at this via the COHP dot org Interactive MAP .

There are perhaps 4 state/county highpoints within a mile or so of the
NC-SC boundary. None are near the counties cited in the article; Gaston
and Union NC. They include:

The obvious Sassafras Mtn in Pickens SC, straddling the state line and
across from Transylvania NC,

The Oconee County SC hill which lies about a tenth of a mile inside SC from
Jackson County NC,

The two spots on Slicking Mtn in Greenville SC, about a quarter mile across
from Transylvania NC,

Little Rich Mtn also in Greenville SC, which straddles the state line and
lies across from Transylvania NC,

The Dillon SC spot which lies about a mile or less inside SC, across from
Robeson NC,

None of these are near the part of NC that contains Gaston or Union NC,
which are East towards Charlotte NC, and are bordered by counties in SC
whose COHPs are many miles in from the state line.

I always thought that these two states might do some sort of a land swap
near Sassafras, but perhaps that's not going to happen anytime soon.

The SC-NC line should not change at Sassafras, Slicking Mountain, or Little Rich Mountain, because the border there is defined by the Eastern Continental Divide rather than a surveyed line. I hiked 4 miles of this line this past Tuesday. Not only is it obvious because the ridgeline and red-blazed trees along the edge of the Greenville watershed, but now it has been marked by a different kind of blaze. Underbrush on the SC side was burned by firefighters to contain the recent Pinnacle fire in SC. As a result, the SC side of the Foothills Trail is scorched, while the NC side is unscathed.

The one discrepancy I saw was a 2001 NC Geodetic Survey benchmark on the SC side of Bursted Rock Mountain. Not only is it misplaced, but it is also misnamed: Bursting Rock rather than Bursted. No doubt, this will cause legal headaches a century from now.

The Oconee border is a surveyed line so it theoretically could be affected, but I have not heard of this line being part of the current boundary debate. Anyway, the bump in question is probably not the Oconee COHP. Same goes for Dillon--that section of the boundary is not being contested. Most of the problems are in the Charlotte-Gastonia area.

I asked about Sassafras back in 2012 when it was announced that SC was acquiring land from NC as part of the project to build a lookout tower on the SC state HP. Tom Swayngham of the SCDNR emailed me back then saying, "The state line will remain in the same location, but SC will own 4.8 acres in NC."

As for the long-awaited Sassafras tower ... wait till next year: Sassafras Mountain project delayed http://www.independentmail.com/story/news/local/2016/10/13/sassafras-mountain-project-delayed/91903952/

Charlotte & Palm Beach FL COHPs

I recently returned from a trip to visit the folks down in Naples/Marco
Island FL pre-Xmas. I was able to sneak away and visit my college roommate
in Sarasota one day, and on the way back to the condo returned to the
northern of 3 Charlotte contours, which I could see across a lengthy swamp
and creek from the southern two when I was there years ago.

I also visited both of the two areas at Palm Beach on my way to the Fort
Lauderdale airport for my return flight to Denver. The northern one is the
area that has been in question for two decades. I was able to get to the
actual high spot as identified from aerial photo and old topo map
transposition. The southern one is as I had found it 8 years ago, and lies
in a side yard, not in an open lot.

Much more in the PB trip reports:

Charlotte FL

D (its about 60d warmer in FL right now than here in CO) C

And Denver is 15 degrees warmer than Atlanta right now. Go figure.
