How to calculate it?
The article told of number crunching on a 2D projection of the continent.

It looks to me like the correct method is to take a globe, cut out North America and then computationally balance it on a pin, forces pulling towards the center of the globe, and find the point such that those forces vs. the reaction at the pinpoint is stable, doesn't tip in any direction.

The USA is 'easy', with the only question about whether or not you include Puerto Rico, Guam or unincorporated territories like Midway Island, Wake Island and Palmyra Atoll.

The problems are more for North America. Where is the southern bound of North America? What is your criteria for including or excluding such things as the North Carolina Outer Banks, Texas' Padre Island, Long Island, Cape Breton Island (attached by a causeway, which now has a channel and bridge...) and so forth.

BTW, a note on the 50 USA center north of Belle Fourche: The literature mentions that the accuracy of the calculation is about 10 miles.

Interesting article in the NY Times. Latest contender is near the North Dakota town of Center (I kid you not).
