I may be the only person who has ever climbed that peak twice--once in early July and once in late July, but the conditions were the same both times, with quite a bit of snow in the chutes up to the bowl. But not enough snow for me--the loose rock in the chutes was the worst part of the climbs, and the more snow there the better, as long as it was good step-kicking snow. Above the bowl, the rock ridge is pretty steep and did not hold snow, which is good, since you would not want any there. The final step is about mid fifth-class but very short. But compared to the miserable loose rock in the lower chutes, it was not a problem for my teams.

So I think July is about right, probably late July this year given all the snow we have been getting. Too much snow makes the PCT approach difficult, but you do want as much as possible to cover up the loose rock, but not any up high. Like many WA peaks, it's a tough balancing act and July is usually the sweet spot.

Las Vegas NV area Nat Mon HPs in the desert southwest - May 1-3

COHPers -

I plan to be in Las Vegas NV from Sunday April 30 > Thur May 4. I will
have a place to sleep for free for myself, but not room for anyone else.

I intend to climb some or all of the following 5 Nat Mon HPs:

Worthington Pk in Basin & Range NM
Virgin Pk in Gold Butte NM
Tule Springs liner in Tule Springs NM
Cady Pk in Mojave Trails NM
Hart Pk in Castle Mtns NM

******************

Worthington Pk 8,968' is about a 3 hour drive away northward in
south-central NV, Class 2+, 2.1K' gain, 1.5 miles O/W, about 2 hours up 2
down.

Virgin Pk 8,071' is about a 2 hour drive away eastward near Lake Mead by
the NV/UT/AZ corner, Class 2+, 4K' gain, 4 miles O/W, about 4 hours up 3
down.

Tule Springs 3,320' is about a 45 min drive away in northwest metro Las
Vegas, Class 1+, 400' gain, 2-3 miles O/W, about 1.5 hours up 1 down.

Cady Pk 4,627' is about a 2.5 hour drive away southwestward in CA in the
Mojave desert between the Y-junction of I-40 and I-15, Class 2+, 2K' gain,
3 miles O/W, about 2 hours up 1.5 down.

Hart Pk 5,545' is about a 2 hour drive away southeastward along the NV/CA
border below I-15, Class 3, 1K' gain, 2 miles O/W, about 1+ hours up 1 down.

See the map here, zoom in to the bottom of NV:

*********************

I will have a moderate 4WD SUV with me. I should be able to reach all the
normal TH spots, pending melting of any recent snows.

****************

I plan to do Cady & Hart together in a long day.

I plan to do Worthington by itself, with Tule possible on the way home.

I plan to do Virgin by itself, with Tule possible on the way home if I
didn't already do it.

I do not care about the order, and can plan that around anyone who wants to
tag along. Dates are firmly in stone. I should be able to get a visual on
Virgin as I drive into Las Vegas on Sunday, unlikely to be able to see
Worthington Pk area. I am a bit concerned about snow up high on
Worthington, but the TH should be OK, and a little tromping on snow w
microspikes should be fun.

I have to drive back to Denver early Thursday the 4th. No time for
peakbagging.

Another peak nearby that might interest this crowd is Signal Pk in
Washington County UT by St George. I believe that getting to the TH would
be possible, but that it would be clogged with snow and would be epic since
it tops out over 10,000'....

Do let me know if you are interested in joining up. You could camp and
meet me daily, or score a cheap room.

Remember, what happens in Lost Wages NV stays there, unless of course you
post it on PBdotCOM.......
