Jon Kamp's wonderful article about highpointing appears on the FRONT PAGE of today's Wall Street Journal (3-10-17). The article centers around Britton Hill, which gets its own Hed-cut (a most impressive accomplishment), and James "Jim" Sutton gets his name on the front page. As the nation's largest newspaper, WSJ's circulation is 2.4 million with 900,000 online subscribers.

Trip report to Hohokam Pima National Monument HP area.
3/6/2017, Andy Martin.

Driving I10 from Phoenix to Tucson I took exit
167 and parked near the HP. Later I drove a bit further
west to the top of the Goodyear Road overpass. Then I
rejoined I10 at exit 175. The route was:

https://goo.gl/maps/2tYwFP4GsdE2

Gila Butte NW 2014 quad (attached) shows the east
border of the NM follows parts of the east edges
of sections 1 and 12. The older quad (last attachment) shows
the topography better, but does not show the NM border.

There are no signs, markers or fences at the NM border,
just the very flat Gila River floodplain with low brush
and a few larger desert trees. Some man made dirt piles
rise above the plain, and old trash piles are found here
and there. After some searching I found what I think
is the mapped BM 1188 (pic attached). It is located on
a cement column that rises a couple inches over the dirt.

I also walked the east border line (marked by 2 white
' pins on the older quad map). This map and pins were displayed
on my iPad, which has GPS, making it easy to accurately
follow the east border line. There is a dirt road along
this line, mostly unused except for the northernmost part.
A narrow ~3 foot high earth dike crosses east to west
just south of the used part of this road, as shown on:

https://caltopo.com/map.html#ll=33.19136,-111.8922&z=19&b=sat

A marker dated 2013 (pic attached) was found just west of this
road and 1/4 mile south of BM 1188. I took sight levels
from time to time but did not detect any obvious natural
rises. The highest man made ground in this NM is the
freeway overpass, so naturally I drove over it to culminate
my visit, stopping and stomping my left foot on
the road as needed.

It is interesting to note that about 10 million vehicles cross
this NM every year on the interstate, making this one of the
most visited NM - in manner of speaking.

However none of these millions have ever snagged the elusive

I've been through this National Monument myself probably a hundred times by
now, and will cross over it twice more tomorrow (heading to Nogales area
for a peak).

This is the site of a huge excavation known today as "Snaketown". You may
see this locale on some maps, but after the archaeological digs were
completed about 40 years ago, the site was re-buried. There is literally
nothing to see here.
