Sumter County, South Carolina

After visiting the Union and Fairfield, SC cohps earlier, wee stopped by the Sumter County Hghpoint, today, and pulled in to the house on the north side right after the lady living there pulled in. We told her of the hobby, and that the cohp of Sumter County should be just south of the county line, and asked where the county line or her property line was along that edge. She said the four rows of pine trees are on the other property to the south, but that the county line has moved. She verfied that she pays taxes for two counties, and that she owns the property from just north of the pine trees to the road 200 feet north of her house. She says she doesn't know exactly where the county line is, but thinks it is just north of her garage and north side of her house. She gave us permission to walk her property, so we walked the ridge from the field edge on the south side of the pine trees all the way to a recently-cleared field with pine stumps just before the road. This hump seems to be the highest point in the contour. We feel certain we hit the county highpoint, just not where exactly on our route. In the future if updated county line maps become available it will clear this up.

HPs of Connecticut 'counties'

While I was recently visiting the highest points of Connecticut counties, I was reminded that Connecticut's counties were abolished in 1960, no county government, and every last government office associated with 'counties' has been abolished.

In school I learned that in New England the Towns (=Townships in the middle of the country) came first and were important to local people, and the counties came later. Now that counties are gone in Connecticut, consider:

The proper dividing of Connecticut is into towns. So just like Louisiana is divided into parishes instead of counties, and Alaska is divided into boroughs instead of counties, ... then the existing list of 8 county highpoints of Connecticut should properly be tossed, and replaced with a list of 169 town highpoints.

This might also be necessary with other New England States...

How often do the town boundaries change? Are they fixed like county
boundaries or fluid like city limit boundaries? If the latter, I doubt
anyone will want to bother with keeping up with these changes. It's bad
enough with those independent cities in Virginia.

The difference between CT's townships and AK's bouroughs or LA's parishes,

If we're to say that CT doesn't really have counties, one should be able to
tag the state's highpoint on the slopes of Frissell and call it good
because the county and state level are essentially the same in CT.

I recall years ago someone did, in fact, post a list of Connecticuts town HPs here (notably, grouped by county). This was around the time the state got rid of its sheriffs, the last vestige of county government there.

Of course the state government still does use counties as convenient administrative categories. See, for instance, this page on pheasant hunting: http://www.ct.gov/deep/cwp/view.asp?a=2700&q=394896, where below a map divided by towns only it says: Some of the best pheasant hunting opportunities are located in Litchfield and Windham County and then at bottom lists stocked areas by county pairs!
