A few weekends ago I was visiting the possible highest points of Caroline county Maryland. After finishing that I was driving away and saw an interesting sight. Along a parallel road, across a narrow field about 0.1 or 0.2 miles away were four houses, older houses two stories, grouped in a line. There were close together, with the space between them smaller than they were tall, and all were the same building plan, identical looking except for the differences that time and maintenance had wrought. I thought they would make a good subject of a Andy Warhol-esque painting or photograph.

More recently, I was visiting one of the possible highest points of Queen Anne county Maryland, and saw 4 turkeys a few hundred feet further along, fighting among themselves. I can remember the days when it was rare to see wild turkeys.

Succession Plan

Hi everyone, forgive me for posting this to the group, but I thought the topic should be brought up. If this discussion has already taken place or is more appropriate for offline discussions, then again, forgive me.

Since Adam and Edwards passing, I've been thinking about what will eventually happen to our beloved websites. Peakbagger, Cohp, LOJ, SP, 14ers, CascadeClimbers, SuperTopo, TGR, ADk46, et al, will eventually run out of people, time, money, or a combination of all three...

The most recent example of this is obviously our beloved cohp.org. Adam and Edwards passing have illustrated the extent to which our websites rely on a surprising small number of people. Additionally, most of these websites are home grown and the knowledge required to run them is often lost with the founder.

My question is, do we have a succession plan in place if, God forbid, something happens to Greg, John, Bill, or all of the other wonderful people running these websites? Do we want one? Who's going to organize it? Who's going to pay for it? What should be passed along and what is proprietary?

I remember when 14erworld.com imploded. There were hundreds of TR's that the founder simply trashed cause he got pissy that week. What a shame! And what a loss of knowledge. At least cohp.org is static at the moment, but nothing new is being added (also a a shame) --- and I imagine cohp.org's days are numbered. It'd be a shame to lose all that great info.

In attending a few Koventions here and there, I can't help but notice that the median age of our enthusiasts keeps getting higher and higher. Maybe we have a youth problem (such as the Colorado Mountain Club)? Or maybe there are just fewer and fewer of us? We need to start to think about the world we're going to leave Ryan Courtney and Chris Gilsdorf --- :)

Anyway, I'm certainly not a computer expert, but I'd be happy to contribute money or time to help preserving and archiving all this info for the younger generation of our hobby. Please let me know what I can do to help.

Sincerely, James Graham

Hi,

James points out a real problem. I'm using the information on COHP.org in
planning to do some New Mexico county high points. I can't provide any
expertise to keep these web sites running, but would be willing to
contribute cash if that will help.

I was considering how heartbroken I would be if peakbagger were to go under. Unfortunately, CoHP.org does feel kind of moribund these days. On the other hand peakbagger seems pretty robust, with frequent updates and a growing membership. Same goes for 14ers,com. A fair amount of the information on CoHP has made it into peakbagger, but it would be nice if even more highpointing info could be folded in (the Rules, for example). It seems like Peakbagger now involves at least some teamwork rather than just a single person, so hopefully that will help with longterm continuity. I, too, would happily contribute money to ensure that everything keeps going.
As far as youth, I think there will always be young folks wanting to climb high peaks, and then a considerably smaller subset of them that become fascinated with lists. I stumbled onto this hobby almost by accident myself just in the last few years. County highpointing requires a considerable investment of time and money; a lot of younger people are going to be more interested in locally based lists and then may expand as their leisure time and extra money allows.

Certainly in NH there are far more list-based hikers than ever, but many are media-savvy and have their own blogs or photo sites. The cohp model where trip reports have to be manually edited and posted doesn't work for these people. Similarly peakbagger.com requires peaks to be listed by users and approved by the moderator, who seems more interested in adding unnamed bogus peaks with 20' prominence (that some individuals suggest to run up their totals) than genuine peaks which languish in the queue. listsofjohn.com is the most highly automated and has the best (USA) lists, but as you say seems to depend on one individual who may someday become unlucky on one of his challenging climbs.

cohp.org is pseudo-public and some people have their own backups in case the site vanishes (like the ME fire tower site did). I'm not sure the owners of the other named sites would approve of this.

Cohp.org, in its earliest days, was a repository of trip reports, this
during a time when there was nowhere else such reports were collected.
Summitpost didn't get off the ground until the mid 2000s and even now, do
not include many flatter cohps. Greg's Peakbagger site lists all the county
HPs, a deliberate act of teamwork between Adam and Greg, this about 8 years
ago (?).

At some point, cohp.org became an extension of Adam, where all his quirks
could be seen in bold-face green fonts and italics and underlines, somehow
making it work. It's one thing to maintain the site, it's another thing to
repeat how Adam did it. Almost all trip reports at cohp.org are now at
Peakbagger, and many new ones are at Peakbagger.

Someone may need to take it upon themselves to download and store these
pages as a backup "just in case". It's an incredible body of knowledge, but
it takes a special kind of person to pour as much heart and soul into their
webpage as Adam did with cohp.org. At the very least, we can make sure the
trip reports are saved.

There's always the wayback machine website, just in case, although it's not
100% reliable.
