It would appear to me that in order to ensure that cohp.org remains viable
in perpetuity, we need to incorporate County Highpointers as a non-profit
organization, like the Highpointers Club. Some of us in this group have
been involved in the incorporation of the Highpointers Club, and have
experience incorporating other organizations. I also know that there are
likely a few lawyers in this group who know something about the various
legal procedures. What do people think about this?

>My question is, do we have a succession plan in place if, God forbid,
something happens to Greg, John, Bill, or all of the other wonderful
people running these websites? Do we want one? Who's going to organize
it? Who's going to pay for it? What should be passed along and what
is proprietary?

Great question.

One thing that gets overlooked is that USA peakbaggers are
sort of spoiled by having two nice peak list websites -
Peakbagger and LOJ. Most countries are not so fortunate.

It would be wonderful to see this information remain available
in future years. Both these sites have a lot of COHP
info, and are a big boost to our hobby.

And closer to home, what is the long term future for the
county highpointing hobby and cohp.org ?

The hobby is fortunate to have many great volunteers
and contributors over the years. The listing at bottom
mentions some of these, my apologies to those I forgot,
will be glad to add you to the roster.

"Youngsters" reading this post who are interested in doing
any of this work are encouraged to contact the current
volunteers and see if they could use a hand.

It would also be great if anyone wishes to volunteer for the
"Jack Longacre" role in the COHP hobby - someone interested
in the long term future of the hobby, with the people skills
needed to get us there.

With respect to cohp.org, Roy Wallen, who has invested a
tremendous amount of time in the trip reports on
the site, has agreed to take over as
site owner if I am incapacitated. Laura Newman (treasurer),
Greg S. and Scott S. (technical issues), and Dave C.
(non technical issues) can help out Roy as needed.

Thanks to many generous donations funds are available to
"keep the cohp.org lights on" for at least a couple more years.

(Andrew Karr)
>>Unfortunately, CoHP.org does feel kind of moribund these days.

Agreed.

Adam left some mighty big shoes to fill.

Those with good COHP content or with programming skills
needed to spruce up the site can contact me or the other
website folks mentioned above.

>>As far as youth, I think there will always be young folks
wanting to climb high peaks, and then a considerably smaller
subset of them that become fascinated with lists.

Hopefully you are right.

Kids are into their phones - apps like Andrew Kirmse's
peakbagger app may get them out of the house and
into the hills.

Some things that would help are:
1. Identify unique points for flat county tops.
2. Make it easy to get driving and hiking routes on
the phone. (Flag bad access and don't give routes on these)
3. Phone logging and confirmation of summit visits,
(for example a selfie with identifying features
in the background)

Perhaps state highpointers could lead the way here, and we
can steal - er I mean share - their work.

Volunteers and contributors to the county highpointing community
Current and former

Roy Wallen - Trip report editor plus A to Z newsletter articles
Fred Lobdell - Tracks completers, RULES plus newsletter articles
Greg Slayden - Online COHP FRL & other COHP content, cohp.org committee
John Kirk - COHP content and completion listings on LOJ
Laura Newman - cohp.org treasurer
Mike Schwartz - egroup moderator
Scott Surgent - egroup moderator, AZ web site, AZ book, cohp.org committee
Dave Covill - CO land work & book, cohp.org committee, state HP liason
John Mitchler - CO land work & book, FRL instigator, state HP liason
David Olson - Trip report editor, former FRL guru, lists
Andy Hatzos - LiDAR work http://www.thegreatzo.com/cohp/lidar
Doug Melton - LiDAR workup on many counties
Andrew Kirmse - computerized list review, Peakbagger app.
Andy Martin - lister, hacker, rabblerouser
Adam Helman - cohp.org webmeister
Edward Earl - Elevation based FRL work
Bill Jacobs - virgin tracker
Ken Jones - former FRL guru
Jon Mann - former FRL work
Roy Schweiker - former egroup work and lister
Cliff Young - former FRL maintainer
Ron Tagliapietra - lists

And I will not list them individually, but everyone who
has posted a good trip report, sent in a good egroup post,
encouraged other cohpers, donated to the website,
etc., etc., has contributed to the hobby.

And we should mention the friends and families that
put up with our peakbagging addictions ;)

I'm no computer wiz but I'm also no dunce. I did reach out to Greg at
Peakbagger a few years ago to ask if there was anything I could do to help,
specifically to help approve provisional peaks and such since there are
some ranked Colorado 13ers that appear to be provisional or missing. (I'm
working through my copy of Colorado's High Thirteeners and making sure
they're all at least provisional peaks!) I didn't ever hear anything back.

To be totally honest, I came to CoHP just before Adam died and cohp.org has
been among the *last* of my resources. I guess I really am a youngin'
because I get frustrated trying to find thing and if it weren't for the
integration with Peakbagger none of my ascents would be logged there.

remember who!) and suggested that cohp.org incorporate as a non-profit
which would allow for multiple avenues to access information and site
ownership, etc. It was mentioned that might be something to avoid because
of issues with access and occasional (benign, if that's a thing)
trespassing to some highpoints.

The only definite advantage I can see to this is that contributions would become tax deductible, and I'm not sure how many people contribute such large amounts that this would be an issue. The flip side being that incorporation requires hefty annual fees and paperwork that would have to be paid for somehow.

Some of you may recall that Adam tried to place ads on the site to pay himself a token salary, and the uproar that caused. Surely the website might be better with a paid employee running it, but this person might also have undue influence and cause hard feelings.

Assuming that a nonprofit could generate larger donations and allow paid staff and a higher profile for the group, is that necessarily a good thing? This cohp e-mail/newsgroup is closed so that trip reports and discussion of trespassing would not be visible to landowners. For years I tried to tell people that visits to a certain peak in NH might be curtailed with too much publicity, and that's exactly what happened when a board member read about someone's hike on the Internet. Lastly some people may remember an incident in MD when "county highpointers" were blamed for destruction of property. If the group becomes more visible and has money in the bank, it may become a target as any destructive visitor can use the excuse of being a "county highpointer" for being there.

So personally I think a formal nonprofit organization is not a good choice. And while I hope that younger people will continue to take a more active role in actual visits, they may have jobs and families that keep them from administrative work. Fortunately there are computer-savvy folks whose best hiking years are behind them and whose families have dispersed who may be up to the task. People will continue to get older so there should be a continuing supply to replace them :-)

1. Essex NJ coHP; 2. Succession plan

Hello,

This past Saturday I visited all (or nearly so) coHP areas of Essex county NJ.

Michael Schwartz's and Dan Case's trip reports were all good, qualification, although I would have liked to have spotted Dan Case's statement about "Maybe behind Claridge I apartments" earlier, when I was there for Claridge II. I went back and went behind Claridge I when it was getting seriously late in the day and dark. From what I could see, behind Claridge I looked highest at the swimming pool, and I wasn't willing to try going over the fence to get the last inch or so of more altitude.

The qualification: When going from the Essex Fells Fellswood HP area to the North Caldwell and county Sanitarium HP areas, Spookymike's report says go west 0.2 miles on Bloomfield Ave. from Fells Road to Mountain Ave. The actual distance is more like 0.4 miles, and just before the 0.2 mile mark is a better access route. Go north on White Rock Road. This provides access to apartments located in the saddle between the North Caldwell area and the County Sanitarium area. There is an access road to both areas from White Rock Road, and definitely a parking lot for the North Caldwell area.

2. Succession plan.
Yes, cohp does look rather lacking in life. That looks more evident on cohp@yahoogroups news digest than on the website. Adam was also busy contributing to cohp@yahoogroups.
As for the cohp.org website, I have been doing a small amount of updating pages for new LiDAR data, and I put up a new trip report of Frederick co. VA.

Marinette County, WI Trip Report 4/23/2017 Bearly Made It.

After bagging the county highpoints of Oneida and Forest counties on Saturday I settled in at Richards Motel and Restaurant in Dunbar. I left the motel at 7:00 AM on Sunday morning and drove west on US Hwy. 8 to County Line Road and turned north and drove 2.5 miles to Christnovich Road/Sugar Bush Drive where I turned east on Sugar Bush and drove to the end of the road where there was a gate with "NO TRESPASS" signs on it. I looked at the trailer house and farmhouse on the south side and seeing no activity decided to continue my hike. I left Andy Martin's COUNTY HIGH POINTS book on the dash so the landowner would know my intentions.
I checked my Garmin etrex Venture HC GPS and it indicated that I was about 0.56 miles from the highpoint. I walked east down the two track road until it split and went north to a cabin where I continued southeast on an old logging road. A deer ran off to the north as I hiked. When the logging trail branched off to the south I continued on to the highpoint as indicated by my GPS. As I was searching for the boulder mentioned by Gustav in his trip report I saw a big black bear and her cubs. They seemed to be walking away from me, but then she turned and started walking towards me. I shouted at her and raised my arms and "made myself big" and she continued towards me. I shouted again and she kept coming. I snapped a picture with my camera that I figured they could post at my funeral. The bear stood up on her back legs to get a good look at me and I noticed that she had a diamond-shaped patch of white on her chest. When she got down I noticed that one of her cubs had climbed a tree behind her. I slowly turned and walked away. When I got back to the logging trail I looked back and did not see the sow. Nervously, I walked back to my Jeep Grand Cherokee. There were two deer in the yard by the farm. The farmstead still seemed quiet and I wondered if anyone still lived there.
It was early in the day and I had planned on doing several more county highpoints, but considered driving 160 miles home. Figuring my odds of seeing another bear that day were low I decided to keep highpointing. I bagged the highpoints of Florence and Vilas counties without incident and stopped at Timms Hill on the way home. It was an interesting weekend of navigating logging roads, bushwacking and wood ticks.
When I got home I looked at the picture that I snapped of the bear. It was blurred slightly, but you can see that it is running towards me. Next time I will have to be sure to keep the camera still when I take the picture.
