Queen Anne MD coHP areas, partial visit.

On Sunday April 23 2017 I went out to Queen Anne county MD. I never intended more than a partial visit this time. I also hadn't translated the dd:mm:ss format of Chip Clark's report to the dd:mm.mmm format my GSP gives. I had correlated Chip Clark's areas to the areas on Adam Helman's coHP.org website.

I got started on Queen Anne county HPs at about 6:00 pm, with Chip Clark's #25, east of US-301. Easy. Crossing US-301 was harder because they are building an overpass, and Tidewater isn't supposed to be
accessible from MD-304. I then took state highways north to MD-19, and MD-19 east to Roberts. I didn't find any of the 'landmarks' named in Chip Clark's report, so I started back-tracking using my GPS. I stopped at #10, had no encounter with any angry female landowner. I stopped at #12, no mailbox with auger stand. I stopped at #13, no road to abandoned home site. It took some effort to find Ben Lee Farm Lane, and I didn't go far enough to get to the 80' closed contour. The whole country is subtle, so 'high' ground 0.4 miles from the paved road at the end of the forest seemed highest to me. The closed contour is maybe 0.6 miles further by the buildings. I then went looking for #32, the BM Saw area. I found some typos in the trip reports. The witness post for BM Saw is on the southwest corner of the road intersection, edge of the forest, not the northwest corner by a power pole. I didn't know how close the BM was to the witness post and didn't spend time scraping leaves off of ?? square feet looking for the BM.

I then followed Ben Lostracco's report, 0.5 miles east on Woods Road and found the obscure woods track at the southwest corner of the field. It didn't look right to me, sloping down and nowhere near the GPS I
expected, so I went back west 0.1 miles to a very small corn field. Here I got closer, but work later tells me I was still 0.1 miles off:
the spot elevation is 0.1 miles further south and a trifle east, near the southmost point of that tiny corn field, or its left-rear corner...

I went around again to the south end of this large area. The windmill looked far away and too far not worth hiking to, and no road going in that direction.

It was by now 8:00 pm and darkness quitting time.

I got 5 of the 41 areas, with 4+ more that Chip Clark thinks are definite candidates, and 11 more of the list Bob Packard had visited.

>>When I got home I looked at the picture that I snapped of the bear.
It was blurred slightly, but you can see that it is running towards me.
Next time I will have to be sure to keep the camera still when I take
the picture.

This might be the closest Bear call on a COHP expedition ?

I recall that John Mitchler erected an electric bear fence
around his tent on an AK trip, but don't think any critters
messed with it.

Per this wiki page

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fatal_bear_attacks_in_North_America#Maps

the last bear fatality in the USA (including AK) was in
New Jersey on September 21, 2014, so Mike S. needs to be
careful on his NJ circuits.

Wisconsin does not have a recorded bear fatality, but
some unlucky soul may be the one to go down in history -
am glad it was not you.

There have been several folks mauled by bears in WI:

Thanks for the comments Andy. I have encountered black bears many times while biking in the Mead Wildlife Refuge near Milladore, Wisconsin or on canoe trips in the Boundary Waters Canoe and Wilderness Area in Minnesota. They have always run away or ignored me. The one I encountered on Sunday had young cubs and was protecting them. She certainly had me worried. You are told to make noise while hiking in bear country, but that doesn't appeal to me as I like the silence of the woods and enjoy seeing wildlife. While hiking the next highpoint in Florence county after my encounter I sang "Dust in the Wind" by Kansas, but quit as it sounded ridiculous.

Edward Earl and I spotted a sow and two cubs in the vicinity of that fatal attack, a year or two prior to the attack. We saw them before they saw us, at a distance of two to three hundred feet. As soon as mom spotted us, she grabbed the kids and ran the other way.

I posted this on March 1st.

Recent info tells me that the higher peaks, Worthington & Virgin, should be
almost completely snow-free, via two posted TRs from a week or two ago.
Sweet....

I have had no one tell me they are interested in going. Sounds like these
will be solo efforts.

If you are interested, please email or call me. I leave Sunday AM for Lost
Wages NV.

Solar Eclipse in August
Wed Apr 26, 2017 9:33 am (PDT) . Posted by:
"Dave Covill" dave_covill
COHPers -

After extensive research, I have chosen to view this event in the center of
the panhandle of NE. I would invite any one interested to join Beckie & I.

My plan is to drive up on one of my visits to the NE, SD, or ND highpoints
for HP Foundation business in the coming month or so, and talk to local
ranchers and ask about the possibility of car camping near one of the NE
COHPs. Ahah! Now I've got your attention....

We may need to grease the skids somehow, and people should remain open to
the possibility of a camping fee, gratuity, contribution to the local 4A
club, etc....

Two websites that are of immense help are one for the eclipse itself, and
one for the weather and sunny sky probability across America. See below.
The intersection of these two lends itself to a high probability of success
in western NE.

https://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEgoogle/SEgoogle2001/SE2017Aug21Tgoogle.html

http://eclipsophile.com/nebraska/

I have created a PPT display and reduced that to a JPG image of the
possibilities. There are MANY Nebraska County Highpoints nearby. We could
in theory, with a little advance scouting and some luck, visit a half dozen
or more. I know some of you have one or more of the ones in this vicinity,
but perusing personal COHP maps, I see that very few people have ALL of
these.

Tiny url is

http://tinyurl.com/l57pmc3

this is for the file

http://www.cohp.org/writers/davecovill/ne_eclipse_17.jpg

Many thanx to Andy Martin for helping me get the image posted online.

There are roughly a dozen NE COHPs within the margins of the eclipse path,
and a half dozen of those are within the window of most likely sunny
skies. I am thinking we should seek out a spot near Antioch NE, or further
eastward a short distance. The highways there will offer us an avenue to
relocate to a better spot as needed. We should be able to get weather
info that morning.

While it is a 3-4 hour drive from Denver to this area, I am intending to
camp up there the night before. BTW - every motel within a hundred miles
of the path of totality is taken, and at brutally inflated prices to boot.
We wouldn't want to be delayed by traffic on I-25 or I-80 and miss it.

If anyone is interested, please post words to that effect. You can meet us
up there on Monday morning Aug 21st, or rendezvous in Denver on Sunday Aug
20th for carpooling up to NE. We have 4 months to go!

I think we had that convo about the best place to see the eclipse on the way down Froze To Death Plateau last year. I've been zeroed in on that part of Nebraska for a while now. Highway 2 should be remote enough to allow for driving the day before if the weather looks bad for the day of the eclipse.

I would be up for hanging out and cohp'ing in the Nebraska area the days before or after the event if you are planning anything. I'll be looking for a solo spot to view the eclipse though.

Quirauk Mountain, MD.

Made a couple of calls this morning for access to Quirauk Mountain, MD, and it appears all the numbers listed on Peakbagger and CoHP.org have been disconnected. I did some reading online and it appears the base was transferred back to Washington County this past fall.

Was wondering if anybody was aware of this outcome and also if anybody has visited the HP since the transfer of ownership?

In the meantime I'm awaiting a call back from a center located on what appears to have been the bases property. I'll see what they have to say.

Has anyone from Pinal County AZ hiked the Pinal COHP ?

Got a phone call from Darren today, who is working
on an article about the Pinal COHP.

He would like to get in touch with anyone who lives
in Pinal county and has hiked the high point.
(email me for Darren's contact info).

The usual AZ based suspects

http://www.cohp.org/writers/FredLobdell/completers_roster.txt

are from Maricopa, Pima, Cochise, Coconino and Yavapai
counties.

Trying to find and also encourage at least one resident
of a county to reach their COHP could spread the word
about the hobby. Not sure what you would call this -
"local involvement" or some such.

Besides Pinal it might be hard to get local involvement
for Navajo, Apache and Greenlee counties in AZ.
Getting this done for all 15 AZ counties would be an
accomplishment. Getting this done for the TX 254 would
take divine intervention ...

I'll bet that for most counties the landowner has been there and will go again

Of course they may not want anyone else...
