I'd call that campground for reservations immediately! We starting trying to get campground reservations 6 months before the eclipse (when some of the online sites start to allow reservations) and almost everything we looked at along a 2-state swath was already full.

ATC August Meeting, Waterville, Maine

The Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) meeting will be held August 4 - 11 at Colby College in Waterville, Maine. For those of you who live elsewhere than in the Northeast, there will be 60+ guided hikes in conjunction with thi s meeting. Four of these hikes will traverse county HPs. Information may be had at the Web site for this meeting: www.ATC2017.org . Most hikes will be repeated on several days. I will briefly summarize the hikes that will visit cohps, as well as three that won't.

Hike #31, the Camden Hills Traverse, will go over the summit of Mt. Megunticook, Knox cohp. This hike will go on Aug. 7, 8, 9, &10 (M, Tu, W, Th).

Hike #33 is a 10.2 mile hike that passes over the summit of Frye Mtn., Waldo cohp. This hike is scheduled for each day from Aug. 5 (Sa) thru Aug. 9 (Wed.). It should be noted, however, that there is a MUCH shorter hike (a bit more than a half mile round trip) t o this summit. See trip reports on the COHP or Peakbagger Web sites.

Hike 46 is a climb of Sugarloaf, the Franklin cohp, scheduled for each day from Aug. 5 (Sat.) thru Aug. 8 (Tue.).

Hikes 57N, 57S, & 58 are traverses that pass over West Peak on Bigelow Mtn., the Somerset cohp. These are listed as strenuous hikes. Hikes 57N & 57S are set for Sun., Mon., & Wed., Aug. 6, 7, & 9. Hike 58 is scheduled for Su., Mon., Tue., & Thur., Aug. 6, 7, 8, &10.

Non-cohp hikes that may be of interest:

Hike #16 is an ascent of Whitten Hill. This is NOT the Whitten Hill that is the Sagadahoc cohp, but is a different Whitten Hill , located in Wal do County.

For birdwatchers, Hike 07 is of the Perham Stream Birding Trail, which is supposed to past thru five different habitats.

Lastly, I have to share something from the description of hike 36, the Piazza Rock hike. This hike goes to the Piazza Rock shelter. Part of the description notes, "Also privy is a two holer with cribbage board between the seats and 'Your Move' nameplate."

Mid-Continent Solar Eclipse

After some study of the data I was surprised to learn that the August 21 Solar eclipse will actually be visible in states other than Nebraska. :)

I have imported the data and plotted the centerline path, northern and southern limits of the eclipse and compared to county highpoints in Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky and Tennessee (and Nebraska). If you live outside of those six states you are on your own.

It turns out that 13 county highpoints are within 2.0 miles (arbitrary distance) of the centerline of totality. A total of 145 county highpoints lie within the northern and southern limits in the six states.

The Trigg County, Kentucky highpoints are within 1.2 miles of the position of Instant Greatest Eclipse. The Williamson and Johnson County, Illinois highpoints are with 4.75 miles of the position of Instant Greatest Duration.

The Livingston County, Kentucky and Monroe County, Tennessee highpoints are closest to the line of totality at 0.2 miles.

I have attached a spreadsheet where I purport to summarize what I have found. There is a fair amount of uncertainty in the exact paths according to NASA, and the coordinates and distances are subject to error because of the uncertainty.

It is possible that you might find an error in the tabulation. If so remember what you paid for this.
