Elbert in June

I'm heading through CO in early June and I'm wondering about doing it
without an axe. Most of my gear is packed up and currently in transit back
to Washington as we're moving back. My axe is one of the pieces packed
away. I haven't been to Elbert since '89 (failed attempt) so my memory is
hazy as to the route needs.
Should I buy another one or go with my poles and microspikes in my pack?
Thanks,
Bryan

### If you have microspikes and poles you'll be fine. Still 3-4 weeks to
go and melting fast. Trail will be Beaten down some. Angle is not steep
anywhere.

Good luck

and the US 50 state HPs, all in one footstep.....) Covill

Black Mesa AZ TR from Dave Jurasevich
Thu May 11, 2017 8:13 pm (PDT) . Posted by:
"Andy Martin" oldadit
Folks familiar with Dave's DPS trip reports know
he does a first class job on these. He recently
sent a nice TR for Black Mesa AZ which is below,
plus some discussion.

(Dave J - TR)
BLACK MESA ELEV 8168 feet (1808 foot prominence)
DRIVE: From the junction of US Highways 160 and 163 in Kayenta, AZ
drive 0.15 miles S on Highway 163 to a dirt road on the right at UTM 12S
0567362/4062472. Turning right here, follow the washboard road 1.1
miles to a fork at UTM 12S 0566367/4061142 (ignoring all obvious forks
along the way leading to private residences). Keep right, driving 0.6
miles to a fork at UTM 12S 0565849/4060487. Bear right and go 0.15 mile
to a road junction on the left at UTM 12S 0565510/4060459. Turn left
(S) here, driving 0.85 miles to a pipe gate. This gate is open or
closed in a fashion to make it appear locked. If locked, park off the
road here and figure an additional 1.4 miles RT to your hike. If
unlocked, pass through the gate (leaving it in the same condition you
found it) and continue 0.7 miles to two large green water tanks. Park.
CLIMB: This route is known as the Yazzie Trail route on Black Mesa and
is the most direct and shortest way to the summit. Follow the road N
toward Black Mesa, passing by some private residences shortly on both
sides of the road. Continue N on the road as it deteriorates and
becomes a trail near the 6500 foot elevation level. The trail now veers
SW on relatively level ground to a fork at the base of a ridge at 6600
feet elevation at UTM 12S 0564368/4057752. DO NOT take the right branch
heading downhill. Instead take the left branch generally S up the ridge
to about 7100 feet elevation, where it turns E and skirts below a cliff
band. Eventually the trail cuts W then N, switchbacking steeply up the
north face to where it tops on the mesa at UTM 12S 0564478/4056502.
There is a large rock fire ring just to the E of this point. From here
the highpoint is 0.84 air miles distant at a 93 bearing. Never
wandering too far from the mesa rim follow faint trails and bushwhack
lightly in places to the summit cairn, which is located next to a pine
tree at UTM 12S 0565916/4056257. This register placement is about 200
yards S of Point 8168 shown on the 7.5 minute topo map. Investigating
the area around Point 8168 there appears to be a competing rocky outcrop
for high point of the mesa, however there was no evidence of a cairn
here. Visit both points to cover all the bases.
RT STATS: 2375 feet gain and 8.2 miles (300 feet of double gain included)
NOTES:
1. Navajo Indian Reservation Backcountry Use permits may be obtained in
person from the Cameron Visitor Center M-F from 8 AM to 5 PM, located at
the junction of US Highway 89 and State Highway 64 in Cameron, AZ. The
cost as of April 2017 is $12.00 per day per person payable by Cash or
Money Order only. No personal checks or credit/debit cards are
accepted. The issuing officer with make a copy of the permit, which is
to be left on the dashboard of your vehicle while you keep the original
with you in your pack while in the backcountry. See
http://navajonationparks.org/permits.htm for additional information.
2. The houses passed at the start of the kike have a number of dogs,
none of which were aggressive but barked and followed me for a short
distance. The residents of the house on the right (W) raise sheep in a
large pen.
3. For the most reasonably priced motel in Kayenta try the Wetherill
Inn, N on Highway 163 about a mile N of Highway 160 heading toward
Monument Valley. Phone number (928) 697-3231 and website
www.wetherill-inn.com This is a popular place and books up quickly in
the tourist season.

(Andy)
Nice TR. If you wish I can forward it to
the cohp egroup. Only think I'd add is to mention
the UTM is WGS84 datum. I am able to confirm
this datum by your UTM at road intersections.

Interesting that the cairn is outside the 8160
contour. Don't recall many details why it was placed at current
location, other than this seemed the high spot,
but doubt a lot of GPS and sight level work was involved
in the placement.

> I had no equipment to determine which
> point was higher and doubt it would even be possible because of an
> obstructed line of sight through the trees.

What is needed is to run a sight level from x8168
(or highest outcrop near it) to the
cairn, and relocate the register & take down the
cairn if needed.

This can be done even if trees block a direct view
by leveling to a distant tree
in the general direction you are trying to sight to, marking
the spot, and then shooting from this spot
(at level you hit it) once again towards the destination,
until it is eventually visible. This is a slow process and
errors can arise, but should work if the points are several
feet apart in height. It is easier if two people are involved,
as the "rodman" can mark where you are sighting on to the tree.

(Dave)
Yes, you are correct that the datum set in my GPS unit for this
DRIVE/CLIMB (road and hike UTM's) was WGS 84.

Please feel free to forward it on to the COHP egroup. Based on my
research before doing Black Mesa I found little detail on the DRIVE in
to the Yazzie Route, mainly just general comments about aiming for the
water tanks, finding a maybe-locked gate, and trouble with vehicle
vandalism at the trailhead. I believe mine may be one of the only
detailed write-ups for the Yazzie Route DRIVE and if that can help
others meet their goals on Black Mesa then that is good.

....
....

Good description of how to determine the actual HP by leapfrogging
through the forest. If I had the bucks to hire a helicopter I'd fly us
in to do the survey but as it stands we'll just have to go with what
we've got. I know it's a purist sort of attitude but anyone wanting to
be sure of bagging the HP (assuming one of us is right) should visit
both locations. Being the compulsive type I did

....
....

Finally, the tribal office in Cameron where they issue permits for Black
Mesa is savvy to the fact that there are two main routes hikers take;
the Yazzie Trail and the long drive up the mesa from the SW. They asked
me which route I was going to take. Having not yet decided they allowed
me to keep the LOCATION slot on the permit general by simply stating
Black Mesa. When I was there the month before getting a permit (a trip
in which I was stormed out by snow) I committed to the Yazzie Trail and
that's what they
put on the permit. Bottom line: If you're not sure which route you are
going to take then keep it general and ask them to simply state Black
Mesa so you've got that flexibility.

Many years ago Memorial Day weekend I went up Bull Hill and the south subpeak of Mt. Elbert from the south, from Lake Creek going up Black Cloud Creek trail ~ 3 miles west of Twin Lakes. I forget whether I took an ice-axe with me. I probably did. I doubt that I needed it. A south approach from sufficiently far east of the main divide will be substantially snow-free.

Cash prize for COHPs ?
Fri May 12, 2017 2:15 pm (PDT) . Posted by:

This post is more fantasy than reality,
realists are advised to bail.

In any case if I ever win the lottery one
way to blow money is to offer a cash prize at the top
of some AZ COHPs. Just wait around early morning
on top of a popular peak like Lemmon, Wrightson or Humphreys,
and dole out cash to the first party to show up.
Media coverage is encouraged !

Well it looks like a Pizza place in Flagstaff had the same
idea, and offered free pies to folks for climbing nearby
Mount Elden:

http://www.foxnews.com/food-drink/2017/05/12/arizona-hiker-nearly-dies-trying-to-earn-free-pizza.html

One pizza lover called for help due to mild hypothermia -
maybe "cash 4 cohps" is not such a good idea ...

And on to the next topic - Andrew Kirmse has whipped up
a computer generated map of every ranked (300' drop) summit
on the planet:

That'll keep you guys busy ... :)

NM Couty HP - McKinley County - Benchmark Alejan

Hi folks,

I'm starting to work on NM County High points. The CountyHP.org trip report of 2004 indicates that this is on private land and access is prohibited.

Have anyone obtained permission to climb this recently?

Thanks,

Pete Bengtson

Peakbagger shows a few visits since 2004, some very recently. It's not a
popular peak so few people will hike it. Those doing the NM CoHPs would be
the only people interested in it.

I was there in 2000, and recall that there is a forest road that gets to
within 2 miles of the peak, and presumably that is still true. There were
gates along the way. Once at the end of the road, then you may encounter
fences at which point you need to decide if you can hike it without being
caught or if you have a good story in case you are.
