Queen Anne MD, Worcester MD and Accomack VA trip reports.

Memorial Day 5-29-2017
For Queen Annes co. MD, I had put together my own route listing, starting from Chip Clark's report. First on my list were Chip's #17 and #18 off of Fox Meadow Road. After recent rains the ground was too wet and muddy. After getting those I aborted Queen Annes and went with my plan B.

For Worcester co. MD I relied on Michael Schwartz's report of 15 January 2002. These items should be noted.

All of the topography here is subtle. You have to rely on the maps to identify what to go to, and again on the maps and surveying tools like GPS, to get there and know that you have gotten there.

His first area = Adam Helman's Area6, the most obvious road goes past the farmhouse east-south-east to the northeast corner of the farm field, enters the forest at N 38 16.808' W 75 32.605' and starts bending northeast. It quickly passes the two take-the-left-forks. The question is how much further does one need to go? Answer is about 1300 ft. The track gets pretty vague after the second fork. Follow it best as you can and arrive at a T-junction with a better track, wooden signboard nailed to a tree here. Then go straight across, north about 200 or 300 feet and a little east. A 'steep' drop-off to the east helps define the highest point.
-- I tried to follow the better track out, but when it curved north I chose to retrace my path.

For Mike's next two areas, off of St. Luke's Road, I followed his instructions "Go about 1/4 miles to a decent gravel road, blocked by a cable, that heads south towards a low piney ridge visible to the south." From 0.2 to 0.3 miles there was forest on the south side of the road, but no 'decent gravel road blocked by a cable.' Just past 0.3 miles is Pheasant Lane, and a ridge is visible to the south, occupied by a cemetery. I checked my GPS and found I was 1 mile too far west. Mike's instructions should read "Go about 1 & 1/4 miles to a " etc.

For Mike's next two areas, off of Sand Road, the first 0.2 miles or so is across posted private land. Perhaps a new route starting further west on State Forest land should be found.

For Accomack co. VA I again relied on Mike, with a glance at Fred's report. Seems short and straight-forward...
I started at the gate to the pasture, near spot elevation 53. That may have been a mistake, and Fred Lobdell's route better. I hiked across the pasture to the left rear corner, then along the ridge past the buildings. I noted two artificial earth heaps and touched their tops. I was perhaps 100 ft. from the right rear corner when the owner drove up in his car to ask if I was lost. I told him what I was doing and that I was done and would leave now. (Well, not quite, but for him I was 'done' and would forego the rest.) He calmed down a little, affirmed that about here is the highest, and that four weeks earlier a lawyer from Fayetteville AR, in Washington DC for business, had come out to this pasture for the same purpose.

The ground rises very subtly. I did not bring my GPS with me hence did not mark any GPS waypoints at the earthheaps or verify that I got into the highest 60' closed contour. While driving back home I thought that maybe one of those earthheaps is the 60' closed contour. If so then there are at least 11 more 55' closed contours that would be candidates for the highest point - what fun! (Looking at the map since then, I am inclined to think the 60' closed contour is southeast of the two earthheaps.)

Regards,
David Olson
