To Those Interested,

In researching the county highpoints of Virginia, Andy's book states that there are three areas on Long Mountain to consider, one with spot elevation 1,428' which is the northernmost peak. I looked up the USGS data on the benchmarks on Long Mountain and found two on the middle summit. They are "Long Mount" and "Long Mount 2" with elevations of 1,435' and 1,434', respectively. There is a reference to "Long Mountain C P Tel Mast" on the southernmost peak but no elevation is given.

Therefore, I would suggest that only the middle and southern peaks need to be visited. Comments anyone?

We have been over this before. For some reason the elevations on benchmarks often don't agree with contours so comparing elevations of benchmarks with map elevations may be spurious. See Jo-Mary Mtn ME for prime example.

Map is at:
https://listsofjohn.com/mapf?lat=37.2945&lon=-79.0787&z=15&t=u&d=y
1428 is NE of the center mark, the other two contenders
are SW.

The odds are certainly in favor of the BM area being higher
than x1428, because:
1. BM elevations are higher, as you point out
2. The BM area is larger than the x1428 area.

That said, as Roy mentions, the online BM elevations don't
necessarily use the same datum as the maps.

>>See Jo-Mary Mtn ME for prime example.

(Map shows peak 2905 feet high)
https://listsofjohn.com/peak/97427

Data sheet shows BM elev 2949:
NGVD 29 (07/19/86) 899.0 (m) 2949. (f) VERT ANG

Something very screwy is going on here ;)

In any case, the bottom line for me is that in this
case I'd want to visit all 3 areas on Long Mtn.

I do think there is LiDAR coverage for all of VA, but
can't find any online maps for this ...

Great photos, although a bit of a long read.

Have not read this 224 page book yet, but looks interesting,
and uploaded it to:
