Biggest discrepancy between #1 and #2

I thought of this while contemplating Connecticut, where the trailhead for Litchfield county is higher than the highest points of every other county.

What is the biggest discrepancy between the height of the highest coHP, and the height of the second highest?

In absolute terms it might be
AK Mt. McKinley/Denali 20320 - Mt. St. Elias 18008, = 2312'
and
WA Mt. Rainier/Tahoma 14421 - Mt. Adams 12276, = 2145'
but the winner appears to be Hawaii
HI Mauna Kea 13796 - Haleakala 10023, = 3773'

In relative terms up until a moment ago I thought Connecticut might take it,
CT on Mt. Frissell 2380 % Hartland 1421 = 67% higher.
but
Delaware seems to take it
DE Ebright Road 450 % Kent coHP areas 80-85' = > 429% higher.

What do you find?

Closest COHP to a McDonalds ?

The COHPer naturally thinks of the New Madrid COHP
Missouri when it comes to combining food and
peak bagging, with the high point only 310
feet NNW of Americas iconic restaurant:

listsofjohn.com/mapf?lat=36.8589&lon=-89.5840&z=17&t=n&d=y

However there are three other contenders for
New Madrid COHP honors, and some are miles from
fast food nirvana.

Another possible winner in the french fry contest is
Scott COHP of Mississippi, which lies only 1530 feet
from a McDonalds:

listsofjohn.com/mapf?lat=32.3202&lon=-89.6652&z=15&t=n&d=y

Fast food TR:

3 min. off I20: goo.gl/maps/cShN6NpLKy32

Slow sit down dinner Trip Report:

You do want to get out of the car ... right ?

If you find yourself driving Interstate 20
across Mississippi consider taking a brief
side trip at exit 77. Scott COHP is just a
mile off the Interstate:

listsofjohn.com/mapf?lat=32.3222&lon=-89.6654&z=16&t=u&d=y

You can pull off the side of the road and park here:

listsofjohn.com/mapf?lat=32.3224&lon=-89.6654&z=20&t=s&d=y

There is a ten foot climb up the road bank to the
west of your parking spot, a bit steep and brushy.
This is the crux of the ascent. Companions unable to
handle the exposure can remain at McDonalds base camp.

After scrambling up the bank you will be in a partly open
forest. Look around for the witness post:

http://www.cohp.org/ms/images/Scott/Morton_BM_and_Witness_Post.JPG

Wander over to the post and the benchmark
"IS APPROXIMATELY 1.5 FEET NORTHWEST OF A
METAL SURVEYING WITNESS POLL AND SIGN."

Background info:

My wife and I visited this spot 6-11-2017, enroute from
PA to AZ. We camped the night
before at nearby Shockaloe Base Camp:
listsofjohn.com/mapf?lat=32.3655&lon=-89.5611&z=15&t=n&d=y
Cost $7, reduced to $3.50 by senior pass. No other campers
present. Tent site, table and pit toilet were OK,
and certainly worth the price.

At the COHP the MORTON 1930 benchmark was hidden under a couple
inches of leaves and I replaced them, so you will have
to brush them aside to see the mark.

The peakbagger app came in handy on this COHP a couple ways:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/peakbagger/id1040718067?mt=8

1. We were camping in the area and I used the app to
look for nearby "peaks", which is how I discovered the COHP.
No other research was done beforehand.
2. We spotted the witness post easily, but could not find the
BM. Then I remembered that the app lets you read BM
descriptions if one is available for a peak. The key text
is repeated below.

The watch tower at the park entrance was closed early in
the morning. It might open at 10 AM ?

listsofjohn.com/mapf?lat=32.3199&lon=-89.6665&z=19&t=s&d=y

I walked around the nearby abandoned, fenced and locked fire
lookout tower. This should "bag" it ??

listsofjohn.com/mapf?lat=32.3202&lon=-89.6670&z=19&t=s&d=y

My wife stopped for coffee at the McDonalds and
we pointed the car west. Destination - the gravel
pit a mile south of Allamore TX.

Somewhere while driving across TX I discovered a tick on
my leg, and relocated him outside the vehicle.
Perhaps he latched on to me during my trek around the
abandoned lookout tower ?

Or maybe ... well you might consider inspecting yourself
for blood sucking arachnids after visiting this COHP.

I recall that York County VA's cohp is around the back of a gas station,
plus other shops along the busy street.

Hostile OH(?) Landowner Trip Report
Mon Jun 19, 2017 4:32 am (PDT) . Posted by:
doug72901
Business takes me east next week and I thought of snagging a couple of Ohio counties. My recollection of looking at past trip reports brought to mind a county I thought was on the east side of Ohio. The scenario I remember was that it was a two candidate county and that the highpointer had visited one and was directed to the nearby second point by a friendly landowner.

When the highpointer drove over to the second point the landowner came out and an angry confrontation developed wherein he accused the highpointer of blocking his driveway and was angry that the next door neighbor had spoken his name.

Wishing to enjoy my trip I thought to avoid this county but am now unable to find the trip report where this incident occurred.

Anyone remember this locale?

Glacier Peak climb in August

OK, now that we have your attention....

I am leading a Colo Mtn Club Trip to climb Olympus then Glacier in August.
4th > 13th or so.

Olympus climb is full, but I would like to have 1-3 more climbers going to
Glacier Peak. Likely would start the climb Wed Aug 9, but maybe Thur
10th. 4 days as usual. Go to PB dot com to see Glacier factoids, TR's, etc.

The ideal candidate has had extensive experience on glaciated peaks with an
ascent of Rainier etc, is in excellent shape, has all the right gear, can
afford to kick in a few bux for gas, possible rental car, motel on one end
maybe, wilderness parking permit etc. Must be a team player with solid
recommendations from other people whom I may or may not know.

If your last climb of a similar peak was a decade ago, please don't apply.
If you've tried similar peaks several times without success, please don't
apply.

I would love to hear from people who are well-qualified to go. Call or
email me.

Here is me:

Foreign COHPers invading CA

Dave Covill and I had a discussion on the CA completers
(see below). He also came up with a related quiz
for your entertainment :

(Dave)
OK, quick quiz:

What state has the MOST COMPLETERS, and ALL OF THEM ARE (more or less)
NATIVES OF THAT STATE?

How about the opposite? What state has the most completers, and NONE
of them are from there?

(Dave to Egroup)
>>D (80% done in CA now, only a handful of non-CA people have finished
that list, all of whom are County Highpointing legends....) C

(Andy to Dave)
>Flattery will get you everywhere ;)

>I tried to mark the Foreigners on the roster below.
>Might have missed some, and I'm not sure where
>Jobe lived over the years.

(Follow up to egroup)
Dave informs me that Jobe is indeed a legendary Foreigner (FF)
The locals are unmarked on the roster below.
I'm not sure about the ?? folks, but expect they
are locals. If you know they are Foreigners
let is know, so they can achieve legend status ...
at least in the mind of Dave :)
