Connecticut, when being formed, was formed with 169 towns in it. Corresponding in concept somewhat to 'townships' in the middle of the country.

Later Connecticut grouped those towns into 8 counties. Later still Connecticut abolished the counties. It still has the 169 towns, and today that is what Connecticut is divided into. Connecticut has no cities or towns independent of these Towns, no annexations, and only occasionally border adjustments.

Yesterday Sunday 25 June 2017 I hiked to the top of Suffield Town, = West Suffield Mtn., 700'+ elevation. I thought it a very pleasant one hour hike.

. Get yourself on CT-hwy 168, west of town-center Suffield. One way is to head west from the junction of CT-hwy 75 and CT-hwy 168. The official start of hiking is the junction of CT-hwy 168 and Phelps Street near the crossible crest of West Suffield Mtn. The Metacomet Trail heads north-south (east-west locally) at the junction. Parking is meager at the junction.
. Hike west turning south, over a hill, drop to a saddle and passing by where an old overgrown woods road crosses the trail.

. I went 1/3rd mile further west on Phelps Street, to where a high-voltage power line crosses the road. More parking, but no sign of the trail that is shown on the map. I bushwhacked for 1/4 mile, found the old woods road and then intersected the trail at that saddle between the hill and West Suffield Mtn. proper.

. Continue along the marked trail up to the top. Total distance is about one mile, on a nice trail, and although most of the view is closed in by trees, it is still an interesting view of the trees and the narrow ridge. The top is fairly obvious and can be more certainly ascertained by using your watch (about 35 minutes), by counting paces or using a GPS. The trail continues going south and in about 2 miles reaches the top of Peak Mountain, the HP of the Town of East Granby. The top of Peak Mountain is not so obvious, with a few hillocks on top which might be the highest.

. In my opinion the trail doesn't follow the route shown on the map. From the saddle of the crossing of the old woods road the map shows a big loop to the north to get on the west of two sharp ridges extending north from West Suffield Mtn. My observation suggests that the trail instead climbs up the east of the two sharp ridges, not making any such loop.

I agree that CT quads don't show trails very well, trail maps aren't much better

I climbed Peak Mtn from the S last winter, also thought summit ambiguous (report on LoJ)
