Berkeley County Highpoint Trip Report

Date: August 1, 2005
Author: Don Desrosiers

The blue blazed trail mentioned in previous reports is now the Tuscarora Trail, although this fact may not have been immediately obvious if you don't live around here.

From I-81 take either exit 5 (WV 51) for 4.6 miles to the 4-way stop with WV 45 where you want to go left. Alternately, you could take exit 12 (WV 45) for 8.2 miles if coming from the north. Go an additional 2.7 miles and turn right onto WV 7, Back Creek Valley Road then another 4.5 miles to Shanghai where you will turn left onto Hampshire Grade Road (Route 7/13). At the top of the rise (4.4 miles) is the signed Shanghai Beacon Trail.

Take this trail for a mile as it rises a shade over 300 feet of easy walking. The tower is obvious on your right with the highest ground just behind. The three points to the south are, in my opinion, lower and can probably be ignored.

Round trip -- just about an hour.
