Greenbrier County High Point Trip Report

Grassy Knob (4,360+ ft)

Date: June 9, 1999
Author: Fred Lobdell

Grassy Knob is in the Monongahela National Forest, in the northern part of Greenbrier County.

From the intersection of I-64 and US 219, take 219 north for about 17 miles to county road 9 (Friars Hill Rd.). (This is about a mile south of Renick.) Turn left (west) and follow 9 as it twists and turns for about 8 miles to an intersection with county 10. Turn right (north) on 10 (which becomes 10/1 part way) and follow it for about 5 miles as it climbs fairly steadily to Low Gap. Here there is a 4-way intersection, with the sharp right taking you up Cold Knob (4,345').

Continue north for about 0.3 miles to the next intersection, where you will turn left (west). Go about 0.75 miles to where a gated dirt road goes off to the left (southwest). Park here.

Walk up the gated road about 0.6 miles to the summit of Grassy Knob. I found neither bench mark nor lookout tower (though the footings remain) but there was an orange pipe, about 3 feet tall, that had the notation "GPS 30" on it. (I found GPS 29 on Cold Knob.) Return the same way.
