Monroe County High Point Trip Report

spot elevation on Peters Mtn (4,073 ft)

reconnaissance only -- not climbed

This is on the VA/WV state line, with the best approach seemingly from the VA side. From VA CR 635, about one mile SW of the Craig/Giles (VA) County line, take CR 613 NNW 3.2 miles to an interesting stream crossing, and either park there, or go another 1/2 mile to a locked gate. Just before the gate, a very rocky track "road" bears right and steeply uphill. A local gentleman advised us that this road leads to the crest of Peters Mountain, from where the yellow-blazed Allegheny Trail runs along the ridge. The A.T. can be followed right to the high point knob, requiring careful inventory of the bumps along the way to ensure knowing which one is the 4073' spot elevation.

The rocky road may follow the route of FR 10420, as shown on Delorme and the topo, in which case the pattern of roads at the crest could positively identify the point at which the crest was reached. We did not hike up the track road.
