Monroe County High Point Trip Report

Go north on I-77 into WV, east on US 460 then northeast on VA county 635 to county 613, which I drove north on good gravel. Then on lesser road I went over Fork Mountain and down (west) the other side, forded a stream and headed up Peters Mountain. At 3,100 feet with a poor road gated on the left and a road ahead inappropriate for my truck, I parked (in VA).

I hiked up the road to ridge of Peters Mountain going west-northwest, then following yellow blazes along VA-WV line after crossing over an impressive gate posted by the Peters Mountain Group. Substantial building was there, too. Between points 4010 and 4036, a road comes in from the north, the WV side. Before point 4010 there was a substantial house with US flag flying, no one home. On point 4036 was a 2-story house with generator behind, and no one home. It was obvious when I got to the summit of Peters Mountain and stood on top of the 8-foot boulder on which was a good cairn.

On return near the above-mentioned saddle, I met 2 guys in jeep, one of whom owned that 2 story house. They had driven up from WV side. Bushwhacked directly off this saddle south-southwest to my truck.

Trip statistics: 3 hours, 6 miles, 1500 feet of elevation gain.
