Preston County High Point Trip Report

Date: October 12, 2002

We found the parking area at the road on the left (Lead Mine Run Road) and the gated forest road on the right, a short distance north of the Preston county line on US119. We hiked up the road, then followed the pipeline trail to the ridge, and over to the highpoint. About 150 yards from the pipeline trail, I noticed we were coming to a cleared area. A large area on the southeast side of the ridge has been cleared, and there are some concrete pieces that may be for gas pipeline extensions. The ridge crest was signed as 'National Forest Boundary,' and we followed the ridge and cleared area to the top.

We touched about three large boulders separated by about 100 feet that we thought might contend for the highpoint. It was foggy, but I looked around a little and noticed a black road coming up the southwest ridge and ending south of the highpoint. This may become a gimme if someone has time to explore for new roads, I would guess coming off of US119. We came from Lead Mine, so we cut off soon and didn't see any roads before our turn.
