Summers County Highpoint Trip Report

Keeney Knob (3,927 ft)

Date: July 8, 2006
Author: Don Desrosiers

I do not believe I would have found this one without a substantial bushwhack were it not for Mike Schwartz's efforts and directions.

I came down from the north (Rainelle), so my mileages may differ slightly from Mike's. In a number of places the signage was "minimal", so some additional information may be in order.

0.0 - Intersection of US 60 and WV 20 south in Rainelle. Stay on WV 20.
15.2 - Turn left onto CR 5 (Elton-Lawn Road) in Elton.
18.2 - Bridge to left over the Interstate.
18.5 - Turn right onto unsigned Grassy Meadows Road (CR 27).
There is a sign for the Grassy Meadow Gospel Lighthouse (in 3.3 miles).
By reading mailboxes, you may eventually learn this road's name but it takes a while.
20.5 - 3-way stop sign. Stay straight.
21.8 - Grassy Meadow Gospel Lighthouse Church on left. Turn sharp right onto Ford Hollow Road (CR 42/2),
also unsigned. Pavement comes and goes and finally stops for good at 23.0.
23.9 - Turn right at "T".
24.1 - Turn left onto gravel road and pass between orange posts.
As noted by Mike, road stays good all the way to the top.
25.8 - Reach top of road and park.

HP is a couple of hundred yards to the left, past the yellow and white pipe gate, and up the hill at the old firetower. Highest ground was inside the fence but the gate, while locked, had be locked inefficiently, so slipping in was no problem. If you are really stuck, touching the highest ground from outside the fence looks feasible.
