Tucker County High Point Trip Report

Weiss Knob on Cabin Mtn (4,440+ ft)

Date: June 10, 2000
Author: Fred Lobdell

The high point of Tucker County is Weiss Knob on Cabin Mountain, just outside the boundary of Canaan Valley State Park. This, too, is a ski area, and a "scenic chair lift" is operated all year. As of the summer of 1999 this cost $4.25 and saved 1,000 vertical feet of hiking.

From the intersection of US 33/WV 55 with WV 32 in Harman, go north on 32 about 10 miles to Canaan Valley State Park. Turn right (east) into the ski area and proceed to the parking lot. Here I had a terrible decision to make: do I spend $4.25 for the chair lift, or do I hike the extra 1,000 vertical feet? It brought to mind the old Jack Benny routine, in which a holdup man points a gun at Jack and demands, "Your money or your life!" After a considerable silence, the holdup man asks, "Well?" and Jack, in an irritated tone, says, "I'm thinking, I'm thinking!" So I asked myself, "What would Andy Martin do?"

After disembarking from the chair lift, the Bald Knob Trail will head east directly in front of you. (This is not the same Bald Knob that is the high point of Pocahontas County.) This trail descends for about 0.3 miles to an intersection with a gas pipeline. (The pipeline path is marked by a 50-foot wide grassy swath that goes north and south from this point.) The Bald Knob Trail turns left (north) here; you should turn right (south) and follow the pipeline as it passes almost directly over the summit of Weiss Knob. The highest area seems to be in the woods a short distance west of the pipeline. There are views north and south. The significantly higher peak to the south is Mt. Porte Crayon, high point of Randolph County. To the north, Bald Knob is slightly lower than Weiss Knob. If you also want to do Bald Knob, you may continue straight when you get back to the trail junction and follow the Bald Knob Trail to that prominence.
