Carbon County Highpoint Trip Report

Date: July 1, 2000

From Laramie take the Route 130 exit off I-80 headed west and drive about 35 miles to the West Lake Marie trailhead. Be sure not to take the Route 230 left fork after getting on Route 130!

We left the trailhead at 10:30 A.M. and headed up the well marked trail to Medicine Bow Peak. Upon reaching close to the base of the peak, I left the others, who were not highpointers, to seek out the Carbon county HP.

I couldn't find the cairn but figured out the approximate area on the topo and stepped on every high rock in the vicinity, which was SW of the prominence just SW of Medicine Bow.

I rejoined the others and climbed Medicine Bow for a repeat of Albany county, where we were entertained by a marmot looking for a handout. We descended and enjoyed the scenery as the view was great!

ELEVATION GAIN: 1,528 ft to peak
TIME: 3 hours 50 minutes up - including the Carbon County HP search;
          2 hours 38 minutes down
DISTANCE: approximately 7 miles round trip
