road distances for southern approach

This effort was part of a larger journey collecting Idaho, Montana, and Washington county highpoints in late June and early July 2009.

In the northern part of Emmett, ID-52 turns from north to east. From that junction it is 4.3 paved miles north along Black Canyon Road. Then take the left fork onto gravel.

Drive 8.7 miles from this fork (a total of 13.0 miles) to a creek bottom with junction. Take the left fork as Fourmile Road.

Drive 5.8 miles along Fourmile Road to the county line (signed), and note a jeep track heading east. WGS84 coordinates at the county line are (44.15456° N, 116.50107° W), elevation 3,859 feet.

Walk or drive the 4WD track. I drove 1.0 mile before parking at 4,247 feet just shy of a particularly steep and nasty-appearing section. This attempt to shave-off effort was a big mistake as the track is festooned with razor-sharp basaltic rock that is the likely source of a punctured tire I was forced to deal with later that day.

SO ... do yourself a favor and walk the entire jeep track.
