Toole County Highpoint Trip Report

West Butte (6,983 feet)

Date: July 10, 2008
Author: Adam Helman

Participants include Tim Worth and Adam Helman.

This effort is part of a larger journey collecting Montana and Idaho county highpoints in July 2008.

It is 33.4 road miles from Whitlash (the village) along Strawberry, Oilmont (paved), Coal Mine Roads to our parking spot for West Butte. This would-be trailhead is southwest of the summit under a ridge that provides cover from being directly seen by the residents of a home on the southern slopes.

Do not drive Gold Butte Road to shave-off distance - it is in poor condition.

There are nice summit views into Canada, forest cover being remarkably absent on the very topmost plateau.

The round-trip consumes roughly 3 1/2 hours.
